Advice on a handgun for my sister

Get her a uber cool OD green G17, and a OD green Maxpedition "Fatboy" her her to tote it to the range. :D

Thanks for all the help guys. She went out and looked at what you guys suggested. The liberals are not going to be happy with her. After she completes her pal with Mike K we are going out to get her a Glock 17 with a matching “fatboy” for her primary and a Taurus 24/7 or a M&P as her back up.

Sweet set up. :D

Dave's carries maxpedition, plus they have a CGN discount. :D The fatboy also comes in black if the "standard" G17 is a better deal, or easier to get.

The safety thing again. Keep finger off trigger until ready to shoot. Why must some people try to make shooting seem so difficult? Self importance? Safty begins in the shooters mind not in the pistol.
Safety on the Glock is simplicity itself, no fumbling around. Finger on trigger when engaging a target. At all other tmes finger outside of trigger guard.
Sheesh! Beginner this and beginner that, I'm so experienced so a beginner will not be up to being able to do what I, a very experiencded shooter, can do.
Is everyone watching me? Look at me! I have great experience!
Why is it when someone says something that another person doesn't like, they turn into a dickhead instead of posting a reasonable, rational response? It was my opinion, not an attack on you...chill out.

Why do guns have safetys??? Why aren't they all designed like Glocks? Because s**t happens. In an ideal world, no one would ever need a safety. I don't think it's out of line to be of the opinion that it's important for beginners to learn how to use a traditional safety. Anyway it's my opinion...don't like it, you can figure out what to do.

Good job on coverting another gun nut!! I wish more of my family were into guns.

I think XD or a CZ 75 would be a problem due to grip size. You have to get her to try a few out and judge for herself.

She has tried my cz and did not like it. I don’t know anyone who has a XD for her to try. She has shot the glock before and liked it.

Nine she did not like the OD so black it is.

Yuri Orlov I agree with you. Beginners should lean with a “traditional safety”. That is why I am going to get her the Taurue or the XD also.

Are you sure she doesn't want a revolver?
Something in .357 (and will mostly shoot .38 spec.) can be everything from mild-to-wild and if she's going to be reloading, she won't have to crawl around searching for brass.
I'll second this, or a used revolver in .38spl.
What about a S&W 617 (.22lr) The S&W 686 is idiot proof IMHO.

Keep in mind that the XD doesn't have a traditional safety either. ;) It's basically like the Glock with an added grip safety.

Obviously not everyone agrees with us, but I believe it's one of the basics that all beginners should have ingrained into them. When not shooting, the safety is on. It should be second nature. I think it's great that you'll be giving your sister a solid start on her road to becoming a fellow gun nut. You do have to work on getting her to like OD tho! :D

Yuri, you don't believe that a revolver is good for a beginner?
I believe any gun can be a good choice for a beginner if that's what they're set on getting. It's not that someone can't be safe using a gun without a safety, it's just that it adds another element of safety for everyone involved. And it sets a precedence for the rest of their gun owning lives.

Why not start someone out by being as safe as possible??

safety? are you on glue? handguns shouldn't have manual safeties. Stupidest idea ever. your finger and the trigger are the safties.

all that said, get your sister out to S&D nights, if you haven't already paid for the Glock, she can get some experience with other guns first, and then you can fork out the money.

Check out the Force Sport series from Tanfoglio ,Top of page Freedom Ventures.
i have a Force Sport 40 nice all around gun smaller size grips .ALSO AVAILABLE IN 9MM AND .22 AND .45

I was going to bring her out for a drills night. Once my back is better. I figured it’s best if she can try out your m&p and see if she likes it out not:D.That way if it turns out it’s a hunk of junk then your stuck with it not me. Also let me know if there is a day that you can go to the range with us. She would like to try IDPA and ISPC.

If she's getting a Glock, just remember to ensure that she only carries it in a "hard" holster which covers the trigger.

If she is planning on handloading, a Glock is not a good choice. The supported case head issue is quite serious (though not as apparent in 9mm).

Re: .44 Mag;

.357/.38 revolvers are an excellent choice to learn how to shoot, it is VERY unfortunate that your sister had a bad experience with that .44.

Sadly many guys think that recoil & blast is a hoot and don't realize that girls don't always agree. Thankfully your sister hasn't been totally turned off.

When shooting with women (especially for the first time) I have found it important to have them "double up" on the hearing protection (ie: muffs & plugs).

A lot of our hearing is actually transmitted by the bones of your head in addition to ear canals.

Women tend to be more sensitive to the blast than men who work in loud environments & start to lose our hearing earlier.

This is not a good thing....for anyone.

anything written by Dean Spier needs to be ignored.
reloading for Glocks is no more safe or unsafe than other guns, you have to perform all the same checks and balances. make sure your brass isn't used too often and you are good to go. Almost all semi auto pistols don't fully support the case head, some near as much as Glock. In 9mm it's truly a non issue.
