HI I'm new to the shooting world. Got my PAL this spring and I put about 5000 rounds thru my little 10 22 this summer. Lots of fun and all but now its time to by a bigger rifle. I was thinking of setting up a target shooting rifle in .223. Our range in the area only goes to 220yards and the next closest is only 500yards, so I wont be needing a monster calliber and it seems that .223 is a fairly inexpensive round. I was thinking aboutstarting off with a Remington sps varmiter and build from there. Any advice would be appreciated.

Windy,
Pull up a chair and stay for a while. You'll get a lot of knowledgeable folks that will chime in...
like yourself, I picked up a .223 to reach out where my .22lr couldn't.
I'm shooting a Remington SPS Tactical with a Bushnell 3200 10x Tactical scope. This set up suits my needs very well and best of all did not break the bank. I share the ammo with my AR so it works for me.
I had the same rifle in .308 with a Falcon 4x14 EMD scope but found it getting expensive to shoot it at paper.
Good luck in your choice!

if you don't want to break the bank then find a heavy barrel savage, they are ugly, fit and finish not great, but man do they shoot, and shoot very very very well. if you can afford more then a tikka tactical will do, pretty much the same gun as a Sako TRG but for 1/2 the price, I would recommend spending your money on the savage and buy a $1000 scope with good rings, then upgrade the gun later if you like rather than buy a Tikka and cheap scope, you will get better results with the savage and good scope. Remmington makes good rifles, I think Savage are more accurate but less custamizable. (is that a word)? I had a savage that shot as good as a Sako TRG, they shoot. I don't like them but they shoot and are cheap to buy.

Dizzy, you forgot to mention that they shoot really efin well for the price or even 3 times the price. I'd admit that mine is probably a ways under .5 moa with a better shooter, better scope and more consistent handloads. Always under 1moa on the bipod in the field. Always under .5moa with sandbags. Sometimes i get real lucky, I've lost count of 5shot groups that look like only 1or 2 bullets went in the one hole at 100y and all the nickel to loonie groups at 200. Only once have I been to 300y for load developing, best that day was just under 2" including a flinch.
Thank you savage for not ripping me off.

I know it sounds like BS but man mabey I just got lucky with this thing. Of all the purchases I've ever made in my life this savage is one of few items that have exceded my expectations and I hate almost everything I touch, it's all junk these days. It's funny how the only things I can think of that have been so awesome to me are this savage, xcr and 10/22. No other tools, toys, devices or machines come to mind at the moment.

My first .223 was a Remington (a 700P) and it has been a great shooter thus far. I've had nothing but positive experiences with Remington stuff. The advice above on getting a good scope & rings is spot on - get something that will last you several rifles. I use a nightforce and it has been great.

If you're interested in a semi-auto - my recommendation (and it will break the bank, unfortunately, but it's worth it) is a swiss arms classic green.

Here is my Remington 700p and my classic green (and sig 226 elite)

Non-restricted, and VERY accurate. I'm not a good enough shooter yet to comment much more, but it's my favorite rifle hands down! Here it is with the nightforce on it and a Larue quick release mount.

.223 is a lot of fun to shoot...I wish I could get some cheap stuff so I could put 5000 rounds down range in a summer ;-)

Swiss arms are accurate but not 1/4-1/2 moa accurate consistently unless you get lucky and get one with a great barrel. that can happen. Dang they are fun to shoot too, but sure beat the crap out of brass, making your cases a 4-5 time reloading deal rather than 10- who knows how many reloads

I went to pick up a Tikka T3 tactical in 223 today and they were both gone, one heck of a buy, they are SAKO TRG's disguised with plastic 5 round magazines and different stocks but the barrel, action and bolt look earily similar to a rifle costing twice the price.
