Advice On A Scope Purchase

Hello all

I have a Savage Axis with a basic 3x9x40 Bushnell scope. Presently I can consistantly shoot 2 inch groups at 100 yards. I know it is not the fanciest rifle but it shoots better than I can so it works.

I am looking to upgrade the scope so I can start taking it out a little further (we have 400 yards at our range).

Are there any recommendations on a scope in the $500 to $700 range you could give me? Do I want to take it up to a 6x power? My eyes are not getting any younger!

Thanx for your help!

If at all possible, go look through some. Everyone’s eyes like something a little different. Asking on here usually just ends up in a brand war. Brands I would consider myself in that price range would be Vortex, Leupold, Bushnell Elite and Zeiss maybe.
3-9 is still plenty to get to 400. Quality glass makes a huge difference. 12x would give a nice cushion and 16x will get you to 1000 yards.

You don't need a new scope unless you suspect that your current one is faulty. Buy $500 worth of ammo, there will be no real difference for you with a new glass.

i completely disagree. package Bushnell and other scopes can be absolutely terrible. i love and use economical scopes, but if i were the op i'd definitely get a better scope. a 4x fixed leupold bought off the ee would be perfectly suited to 99% of hunting situations.

having said that, a little story.

recently met an older fellow at the range. long story short: he could not even get his cheapo bushnell 3-9 on paper and was almost out of ammo. but he was not aware that his scopes eye piece was adjustable and was way out for him and me. the objective was locked at minimum.
after unscrewing the ring by about half an inch (ie just about off the threads) and retightening the lock ring, the scope went from complete unusable POS to at least shootable. it seems that getting the reticle into focus greatly improved the overall image of that really crappy scope.

this is a good deal i think

UPDATE - got a Vortex Diamondback 4-12-40.
Haven't gone to the range yet but I have been sighting in the backyard.
Very happy with the clarity and the detail.
I was admiring the detail I could see in a tree that I thought was about 50 yards out. Turns out it was a tree in another yard about 200 yards away!
Can't wait to see what it can do on the range!

Vortex is one of my favourite scopes. I have a couple Nikon's as well that have nice glass. I just was out looking at a new scope for a new .257 I've ordered and I also looked through a Scorpion and was really impressed with the clearity. What caliber is your Savage?

My Savage is a 30-06.

I have taken it out now. Took a bit to bore sight but finally dropped the last 5 out of 10 into the bullseye. Love it!!

I've gotten some high quality scopes in that price range by watching for them on sale or buying second hand. In that price range or less I've bought a meopta meopro, leupold vx3i, and zeiss conquest hd5. I'd recommend any of them.
