Hi. I have a No4 Mk1 that has a sporterised stock that has seen better days. I have been looking for a synthetic stock and found two brands - ATI (see http://www.cabelas.ca/index.cfm?pageID=71&section=1281&section2=1492&ID=111) and Ram-Line (see http://www.cabelas.ca/index.cfm?pageID=71&section=1281&section2=1492&ID=4885).

I have no experience with either brand - and experience, advice etc.?

Thanks
Greg

Stay away from the ati stock it is a massive POS. I gave mine away and my buddy tried to give it back twice. It is very heavy fits like crap (not drop in or even close) and requires massive material removal for fitting, the checkering panels pop out and cut your hands the recoil pad is solid and the whole stock has a huge line of mould flash running around it. I have no experience with the ram line it could be much better as they have a better reputation.

Thanks for the input mg4201. I looked at the "some fitting required" comment on one website and wondered if that was an Ikea "some assembly required" or a DIY 2x4 and a carving knife effort... That and bad flash and rough chequering - I think I will pass.

And plinker777, that would be nice. Very nice. But, I battle to take nice wood into the woods to get beaten. I am thinking plastic for a favourite hunting rifle. Nice full wood would be nice - sorry, ready said that :)

there are usualy some nice rear stocks that were made to sporterise enfields after the war available. bishop made some and so did churchill. look at gunshows or post in the EE. just give the stock a good coat of polyurethane spar varnish. there is always a lot of sporterised wood available that will lighten your rifle up a bit and have no historical value so modify to your hearts content. that enfield is a killer hunting rifle. check out 303british .com. happy hunting.

First off, IF the rifle is restorable (ie: the barrel hasn't been chopped & it hasn't been drilled and tapped or otherwise "bubba'd") either restore it or sell it and put the money towards the purchase of a "sportered" Lee Enfield. I don't know about your neck of the woods, but a nice sporter No.4 runs $125-$200. hereabouts, depending on condition and price, and there are lots of them out there. Given that nice No.4's are getting pricier and scarcer, it would be a sin to deprive history of another one.
That said, I had a sporterized LE given to me years ago as a debt payment. I put the Ramline stock on it, and it was easy as all get out. As a plus, the recoil pad on the stock was excellent, and did a very good job of managing the recoil. The only thing I didn't like was the feel of the stock, so I filled the voids and the butt stock with spray insulating foam. It gave the rifle a more solid "feel". I wan't reloading at that time, so it never gave me the kind of groups I wanted and I ended up selling it, but if I was ever to make up another one, I'd buy the Ramline stock in a heartbeat. If you go that route, let me know and I may be able to give you a few pointers. Lots of luck.

My old man has a Ram line on his longbranch. Comfortable, good fit and finish and lighter than wood. I agree with filling the voids in the butt with something. I like it but it feels kind of cheap and hollow.

I have the fore-end from one, and the butt from the other brand - Can't remember which is which; The butt does NOT have a raised comb, if that helps.

They are solid-ish, but seem to drop into some actions, and not quite fit others. (I have had these bits on three different rifles).

If you make me a reasonable offer, I would probably sell 'em to ya? (They have received a krylon camo paint job).

Seriously - If you are interested, send me a PM, and I'll snap you some pics.
