Hello fellow gun and hunting enthusiasts. I'm going to be going on a 2 week hunting trip to Nova Scotia with my dad soon and was wanting any and all advice, tips, or tricks for black bear hunting. The trip will be Oct 4th-20th. I don't really know much about the trip as I'm not the one setting it up so I don't know what region of NS I'll be hunting or even what rifle I will be using. Aside from your knowledge on bear hunting itself if anyone knows much about bringing a knife in your luggage that would be great aswell. I plan on bringing my 4" skinning knife if it's possible.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Put you knife in your checked luggage. In carry on and you will be sure to loose it to security. Have fun hunting, make sure there is a back-up gun available. Evening hunts rock.

Shoot em uphill from the truck.

Yup, they drag like they are fighting you! I've been hunting bears here for several years now, sounds like you have not hunted bears so I'll try to cover a few things.

Everyone here hunts over bait sites, usually from a treestand. There's no spot and stalk here, thick woods and poor visibility are the norm. Bears tend to be most active at dawn and dusk like deer but I have bumped into them during the day lots too. Be quiet and ready always, adult bears are about the most silent things in the woods, you rarely hear them come in, cubs are noisy as are deer by comparison.

Their vision isn't fantastic and I don't think their hearing is any better than a deer. Their nose is their main sense so if you are upwind, they will know you are there. They are not that hard to kill, at the ranges we shoot in NS any deer sized centerfire rifle should do the trick as long as you do your part. Cleaning is a breeze, they do not stink like many think they do ( none I have been around anyway) and no stomach to nick like a deer, they only have intestines.

If you get one, skin it after it's hanging and clean all the fat off the meat. I find it tastes a lot like beef and I have not had any bad tasting bear meat but where I hunt there is no garbage for them to get into.

Not much else I can think to tell you as the site will be set up by someone else. Good luck!
