I am considering building a Mosin Nagant 91/30 sniper and am in need of reference materials. For example, what is the hall wall varient and how do receiver shapes play a role. What is PU, PE, etc. While whatever I come up with will be a replica of sorts, I don't want to create something that's obviously historically inaccurate.

any advice? Any good books or websites on doing this?

First, don't alter a collectible rifle. There are some MNs around that were snipers, and were converted back to standard service rifles. Altering one of these is more restoration than anything else. If you check Claven2's posts in the Milsurp section, you will find a detailed description of this process. Repro scopes and mounts are available, made in the former Soviet Union. If you do not want to alter the bolt, you can buy bolt bodies already converted to sniper configuration. Have a look on eBAy to get an idea of what is available. PU scopes - the short ones - use a sidemount on the left sidewall of the receiver (round, high). The long PE scopes mount on the top of the breech.
You will need to drill and tap two holes in the receiver, drill and ream holes for a couple of pins, fit the base to the receiver, inlet the stock for the base, alter the bolt handle. Approximate windage is achieved when the mount is fitted. Crude elevation is obtained using adjustments in the base. The PU scope moves the crosshairs, not the image, so you want things lined up pretty well before you start using the adjustment knobs.
I wanted a simulated, economical sniper for range use. Considered a MN/PU project. Instead bought a bubba'd 03A3 Springfield, which already had holes in the receiver, installed a Weaver 330 scope in Redfield mounts. Currently waiting for stock hardware, and some other bits & pieces. Total cost will be less than doing a MN version. It will resemble an 03A4 pretty closely, and I'm already set up for .30-06.

That's high wall boy!

High wall receiver refers to the left side of the receiver. If it has been scalloped it is a low wall. Most post 1943 91/30 have high wall, round receivers. The high wall facilitates the mounting of the PU mount. The PE mount is for earlier and in my view preferable, hexagonal receiver. A bent bolt can be had on auction sites for $50.- US. You might want to a have a gunsmith attach a PU mount. The cost of custom drills and taps can be goofy if they aren't included in the mount package. Remember, you own apiece of history. Bubba is not your friend.:sniper:

got my local smith to build me 1
you need a high wall nagant / pem or pu mount
pem is top or side mount with a regular looking style scope?
pu is shorter/ late war, an side mounted/
the site www surplus guns has a few articles , any good smith should be able after a bit of study to set it up.
mine shoots great /
the expensinve part was the scope an mount, an bent bolt.from ebay, other sources if you look/ work cost depends on the smiths time an schedule.
