Been reading a lot of post about how much muzzle velocity differences affect groupings in 22LR at ranges above 100m.

Last fall, Rick brought a LABRADAR to the CRPS shoot and although we were having issues with it it was cool to get our muzzle velocity. Now that piece of kit is above my price point so I’m looking for advice on old school chronograph.

Particularly I’m looking for info on is chrono have difficulties picking up 22LR.

Thanks

I have used a Competition Electronics Prochrono since 2008. I think its up to $135 US now. It works very well and I'm completely satisfied with it. We chronographed a 50 year old Benjamin 5mm air gun a couple days ago. You will need to pick up a cheap camera or spotting scope tripod. I always disconnect the 9 volt battery when not in use as it seemed to kill the battery if left hooked up. It goes to the range in a plastic Mastercraft tool box that holds the unit and tripod.

Check the reviews and judge for yourself.

If you wish to get data such as MV, ES, and SD any number of chronographs are available at reasonable prices. The least expensive may require the shooter to record the data manually, that is write them down. Others may offer printouts or connection to smartphones, tablets etc.

If you wish to both chronograph your ammo and shoot for accuracy at the same time, avoid chronographs that attach to the barrel of the rifle. These can alter how the barrel performs and can diminish accuracy.

Hi I have a Magneto Speed Sporter Crony, and yes it does have issues with standard or sub sonic rounds. It is also noted by Magneto Speed that it is not recommended for 22lr. HV rounds might be a different story, have not tied it with HV rounds as i shoot standards.

I'm quite happy with my CED M2 chronograph. The software saves the information in Excel format so it's easy to work with.

I use a Caldwell Chrono and it works perfectly . Even with subsonic .22LR in the cold . All data is transferred instantly to my phone with zero effort . It also allows a photo of the group to be added into the data if desired . It wasn't expensive but it works great . No complaints at all .

I have a Lab radar and it’s number two. First was defective and I can’t seem to get the replacement to work either. My opinion is overpriced junk! I have even had my gunning buddies try to get it to work and it doesn’t. One owns one and his works!! I borrowed a magnetospeed and it works awesome and haven’t had issues with not reading subsonic 22 rimfire ammo. I know what I’m buying next. Don’t get the “Big Orange Paperweight”. This is the handle my CRPS buddies have given it. SilentRadar has one I’ve shot over that worked perfect but with battery and stand and almost $1000 it’s like flipping a coin.
