Advice on CZ. 858

If your only going to have one rifle it should be a cz858 7.62x39. Don't get me wrong I personally love sks's but I love my cz more :) if your going to buy a tapco stock and 4 mags for your Sks. you might as well buy a cz and it comes with 4 mags. If you want to tacticool it the accessories are nicer than tapco stuff.

thats the thing. I HATE tacticool, i love the look of russian made guns, in original furniture, the clean, mean eastern block look gets me every time. but, saying this also makes me think about the other side of the fence....

i need a scope, and i dont know what one i would get. i would want something older that was used in the era. but that may get pricey

Get one of the " Canadian " versions , with the nice wood , if your not a fan of tacticool . As far as a scope , I'm assuming most of them weren't scoped in their original usage .

Hello!

I was thinking about buy a Cz. 858, or (vz. 58)

I have my non-restricted, i love the look, love the style.

I already have an SKS, so i would get the CZ in 7.62

Any better options that someone could suggest? Pros and Cons of this gun?

Always loved the AK, and this as close as im gunna get (as far as i know)

Well I'll tell you this much, I had a Norinco SKS and then I got an 858 from Canada Ammo. It was DOA when I got it, completely used and factory return and they told me basically to ship it to wolverine on my dime and deal with them lol

I got the new 858 from Wolverine, it was brand new, those guys are awesome. It fired well for about 800 rounds and then the trigger broke, so I had to send it back. Wolverine completely replaced the trigger for me free of charge.

The SKS just doesn't stop, you can't break it unless you try. The 858 is less reliable, more accurate, more expensive, better looking, more ergonomic, weighs less, shorter, and so forth. This is why I have both, the 858 is a way better gun but it will break before your SKS so own both and buy your 858 from Wolverine.

POSP scope!

I soldmy 858 bc they it was not crome lined. I prefer the FSN variant offered by Marstar bc it is crome lined http://www.marstar.ca/dynamic/category.jsp?catid=75236

Excellent design highly recommended

so all the cz's that come with chrome lined barrels are "FSN" variants ? never heard of the FSN before. I'm in the market for buying a 11" or 7.5" 762x39 cz/vz.

not to hijack, but what's the difference between the cz and vz ? is one a stamped receiver and the other milled?

I'm curious here I have neither but I want one not sure what one since they are both awesome looking and cheap to shoot, I'm just wondering how much more accurate are the cz vs sks? Like 3-4 inch groups instead of 4-8? Are they really worth the 300-400$ more then an sks?

SKS's will do about 3-4 MOA with surplus ammo, so the CZ does about the same. The CZ is much lighter, more ergonomic and definitely worth the $400 more than an SKS.

Just got a new bone stock 858 yesterday and shot it today first time. I've owned several SKS's and AK's in the past.
I'm more impressed with the 858!
Put 50 rds down range today and it was flawless. After I got zeroed in at 25 and 50yds, I shot 10rds @ 100yds for a group of 4" with Czech surplus.
It's more accurate than my SKS and easier to hold. Shot a 5 rds 1" group at 25 yds standing dead center.
I'm more used to an AR15 style of mag changes and bolt release, but the 858 is doable.
Stripping down for cleaning is the simplest design without tool I know of. You don't mind banging corrosive ammo with this rifle. It's not a chore to clean later.
I'm thinking the SKS will stay in the safe for a long time. I'm over here now. :)

BTW, it even comes with a factory test target.

I am putting on the flame suit here :stirthepot2:, but when I started out with firearms naturally my first gun was an sks, after I got a 858 I actually found that I liked the sks more! maybe I'm not a great shot but on the bench I could get 3" groups (5 shorts) with my cz 858 and about 4" groups with the sks.

That being said I found the sks a much better built gun with chrome lined bore, piston (I think?), screwed barrel instead of pinned, and overall built like a tank, almost no stamped parts at all. Much more reliable with the laquer coated surplus than the cz. I know some of you will say lack of maintenance etc but I clean my guns very thoroughly and found that I could shoot as much in one session with the sks without jams, whereas the cz would jam at about 200 rounds, both being run very hard (rapid firing)

In my opinion the only thing the cz has on the sks is removable magazine! the accuracy difference wouldn't be noticeably different for these kinds of guns, and I think we can agree which will be better as a club ;)

though not an indication of quality, I'll bet it would cost more to build an sks than a cz858

You have to look at the time frame here. SKS's and early AK-47 were all milled. That being said, the VZ58 adopted milled receivers with stamped parts just as much during the late 50's and 60's. SKS's in China were using many stamped parts too and pinned barrels also.
The Galil's used milled receivers also, but I'm not sure if barrels were threaded or pinned in since I haven't seen one in decades.
The SKS was one of those brain child's that got shelved by the AK before it knew it. The M14 was also short lived and supplanted by the M16, but we still love our milled M14's.
The key is cheaper to build, the AKM and M16 in mass quantities.
I'd still take an AR15 anytime if I had to pick one only.

No, FSNs are Vz 58 variants made by a different company (Novohradsky). The restricted CZ 858 made by CZUB has a chrome lined barrel too.

Basically, CZ 858 is just a model name. FSNs, CSA Vz 58s, and CZ 858s are all Vz 58 variants. CSAs are newly manufactured, CZ 858s are assembled from surplus parts. Not sure about FSNs.
