advice on hunting rifle for Bison

Im getting a new rifle for this hunt it is part of the fun .
Im looking for sumthing Stainles in the $1000 to $2000 for rifle so I can get a new rokon trail braker to go with it
the older I get the bigger the toys lol

Carverk, another suggestion to consider might be a 375 Ruger in either the Alaskan or the African.
Superbly accurate, dependable , well within your price range it would make an excellent thumper and recently a few have turned up on the EE for a darn good price.
I have found them to be a very comfortable rifle to shoot and with plenty of reach. My teenage grandchildren shoot mine and love it.

Several bison farmers I have talked to suggest 7mm rem mag, bison is a dangerous animal and a cranky old bull just may take an interest in you long before you even catch wind of it... Whilst not armour plated most are culled with either a hand loaded Nosler or Barnes bullet or Winchester Gray box power point from 100-200m while the truck is still running...

So are you planning to hunt the east side of the higher then? Best wait for it to freeze and snow a little.
Also, I was unaware that non residents can hunt wild Bison in Alberta. In fact I don't think you can. Did you have that call with F&W yet?

Hit it low in the chest, the vitals are not where you would think they are.

This is true, and important!!!
I like the 338 Win mag, but there are many decent options, starting with the 308 and working up.
I have shot only 3 Bison, but all were with the 338 and 210 Partitions.
One went 40 yards after the shot. The others did not go 20.

It is not by muzzle velocity, it is by foot pounds of energy at 100 meters.

The 7x57 does not make it as acceptable for bison. Even handloads are still not acceptable.

BALONEY!! I have several 175 grain loads that reach the minimums easily in the 7x57. [2300+ ft lbs at 100 meters]

this will be my only bison hunt just a once in a life time hunt

Good excuse to buy a new rifle. 338WM or 375HH or 9.3x66 Sako in a Sako Grizzly, Brown Bear or Black Bear would be sweet!!!

Money no object, Leupold VX6, Zeiss or Swarvorski, Sako Optilock Ringmounts.

A Leupold VX3 would be fine too.

did some poking around and it seems like the minimum are rounds like the 7mm-08 , 7mm mauser , 300 savage , 308 and 303 british .

factory 45-70 rounds do NOT meet the minimum requirements .

if your using a 45-70 you need to at least load it to the levergun specs , and even then you need to use at least a 400 grain bullet , the 300 grain doesn't make it ... even when loaded to ruger #1 specs .

454 casull ( in a levergun ) also seems to be able to make requirment too ... but again you need to find something much heavier than 300 grains .
