Hi,

So, I was hanging out with some friends at a BBQ and got on to the topic of clay sports. One of them was quite interested in learning/participating in trap and asked if they could tag along next time I go out. I'm more than willing to take them but here's the thing..i'm also kind of new to the sport being a semi-active trap shooter for just over 1 year.

This friend of mine has no experience with any kind of firearm and I have no experience taking out new shooters.

Any advice from some of the more seasoned/experienced members?

Thanks,
CJS

What I would normally do is before you go to the actual range, invite them over and go over the basic function of the gun you'll use and all of the safety stuff. Teach them stance, and how to load/unload and give them an idea of how trap is shot (lot's of Yuotube video out there).

Once at the range, have them watch a round of trap before stepping onto the field so they know where the targets are coming from and where they're going. As already mentioned, you might ask a more experienced shooter if they wouldn't mind helping you introduce a new shooter. Make sure you have decent eye & ear protection. At our club we do it all the time. Just make sure you don't squad with a bunch of grumpy old farts who moan and complain about the new shooter taking too much time (we also have a bunch of those, they don't remember they were new once and they didn't already know everything).

All great advice ^. Talk to your club about bringing in a group. They should have someone who teaches youth or new shooters. They can provide the knowledge and experience on how to help them hit the clays, and it will be soooooooooo helpful and save so much time if you take care of the safety and handling aspects in advance. That way it leaves more time for actually shooting.

Start them off at the trap field. Have them lock the trap for straightaways and have shoot only station 3. It's more enjoyable if they hit a few birds their first time out

If they do not have a firearms license, then there must be a licensed person with them that can take care and control of the firearm. So, usually what I do is stand beside them and I have the ammunition and drop the shell into the chamber.

Next time you go shooting, take your friend along and he can see what trap shooting is all about.

Where are you located in SW Ontario? I often take new shooters out to the Oxford Sportsman's Club (south of Ingersoll). I can do the same for you and your friend if you want to go to the Oxford Club. Send me a PM, if you are interested.
