Iam definatly going to be doing my black badge course soon, but looking at my pistols I have in .40 s and w(thats the round I want to use), I feel I need something new for this, I got a 96 berretta, an xd tactical in .40,and a norinco np 58, but I iam seriously looking at 3 other pistols for my ipsc shooting, and it will be in .40 smith and wesson.First is the para p16 40 limited, second is the bul transmark M5 1911 style and the third some of you may laugh, is a browning high power in .40 .I need some info from the ipsc guys about my choices based on if they own any of these three pistols and how they like them the bull M5 fits my hands oh so sweet, and love the idea of the heavy barrel setup but i have never had the chance to use one to see about accuracy or reliabilty,Ive shot a high cap para and it seems to suit me well and from the results I got with only running a couple of mags out of it,I know we could be come one with each other lol,now for the browning ive shot a few browning high powers and can honestly say i love the way they feel and iam quite good with them but they have all been in 9mm so any advice based on experiance guys, also the best place to get what iam looking for and if any one has anything like this they may want to wheel and deal on I may be interested

Help yourself and don't buy those pistols if you want to enter Standard Div. buy STI.

Good luck

I am new to handguns and have just purchased my first

A tanfoglio L .40
website states (Double action semi automatic pistol made for I.P.S.C. - Production and Standard Class - and I.D.P.A. competitions as well as for target shooting.)

was recommended to me for IPSC etc

good reviews
solid, and tight feel, good weight
mags are cheaper
adjustable rear sight, (over the SPO1)
aftermarket stuff available in canada

Looks like you can get a good price on them right now on the EE dealers forum

Easier on the pocket than an STI

I hope it was a good choice, maybee you might want to consider this line?
anyone eleses input?

Hi....if you have only been looking at the Para, Bul and Browning because you can't afford an STI or SVI then I recommend first checking out the CZ Tactical Sport in .40...CRAFM received an order of them just recently and may still have one (price below $1200)...definitely my choice for something "other" than STI/SVI performance wise, especially if money is the concern

CRAFM is getting 6 sick SVI standard guns before the end of January :D

yes they are awsome but also make my bank account feel ill lol i should say iam looking at only shooting production class for the first year or two as i probably wont be able to make it out to alot of matches due to my job just want to get out there and do it with out breaking the bank and dont really like the double action triggers on the automatics or i would just use my 96

FIRST shot in Production division MUST be double action, the rest may be single......due to your finances and the limited number of matches you plan on shooting I recommend just using your Beretta or XD (and loading a softer 40 load) until you've had a chance to get some IPSC experience and knowledge under your belt to better make a decision.....most Production shooters use a 9mm though (you can pick up a used CZ Shadow for fairly cheap).........if you only want to shoot single action and use a 40 then you should be looking at shooting Standard division, not Production

If money is an issue, why not just use the Beretta or the XD for the BB Course?

Not a lot of people use .40 in Production Division, as it is more expensive to shoot than 9mm.

What you already have will easily suffice for the starting phases of IPSC, shoot the sport for a while, then decide what gun you would rather use. This way you can try on some other guns that other shooters have, and make an informed decision!

There will always be lots of advice on what type of gun to buy. Its really like a Ford /Chevy arguement. Its really what you feel comfortable with. Just stick with something that you can get parts for. Also look at what a lot people are using. If nobody is using that type fpr IPSC there is probably a reason.
When you first start in this sport the gun isnt the thing that limits your game. There is lots to learn.
I started with a 1911 single stack 45 and fought with feeding problems for a few years so that was a limiting fact for me. Since then i have a Smith and Wesson M&P in 40 and i love it. It is very reliable. You can start with that in production and when you want to move up to standard you can modify it with out having to spend thousands on a STI or SVI. I have my mag disconnect removed, apex competition trigger that is sub 3 lbs, dawson precision fibre optic sights and i have put grip tape on the grips cause even though the grip is textured the polymer is still slippery when sweaty.
This gun will be ahead of your skill level for years. You will only need one those expensive guns when you start shooting more than 5000 to 10000 rounds a year.

you do make a valid point and i got a #### load of mags for the 96 and my xd 10 plus for each iam just not really enjoying the triggers on either of them nor the sights especially on the xd any place to find good sights and trigger kits for the xd pistols or the berreta i did check out the tangfoglio sigt just a minute ago and they look pretty good iam headed west this week and will be in calgary and edmonton any stocking dealers there i can go check one out as for shooting 40 its because iam set up to reload for it and have probably 8000 rounds of brass to get me started that and i like the calibre

....,,,,,,???!!!

Here's some free puncuation to use for your next post. :D

Well, see, you go and start messing with the triggers on those guns, and you will be putting yourself into Open division.......seriously, leave the guns alone, shoot what you have for the BB Course, then decide what direction you want to go.

thanks for the input but easy on my skill level i bought my first pistol at age 18 and iam 41 now and yes i can shoot lol i may not be in the top 5 at a match but i feel once i get into things i wont be near the bottom either lol

Sounds like you are going to do whatever you want anyways, good luck to you!

no iam looking for advice to make a good choice based on some others expreience,i just figured there would have been someone using the 3 i had my eye on is all, i may take your advice and use my xd or berreta but iam going to buy another pistol just for this, as one guy posted about the tangfoglio i check out the web sight and they look to be a well balanced pistol with a well proportiond grip

Hey Jimbo.....2 places you MUST go later this week....first in Calgary is the Shooting Edge, in Edmonton is the Phoenix Indoor range.....BOTH have a variety of handguns you can fire to see how they suit you

cool ive been to shooting edge a few times good bunch of people, but phonix range the first couple of times i was in there they kinda treated me like an idiot, so not really looking to spend my money there. as one fellow said to check out the tangfoglio line and iam impressed by what i see and as 7.62 said if i choose a single action trigge,r i will be in standard division which i can live with, so that tangfoglio match looks like a sweet gun, just got off the phone with double tap sports sound like good place and he dosent have any in stock but seeing as iam working out of brampton, mississauga is just around the corner he is gonna bring his in and let me check it out,but judging from the decent attitude of double tap iam retty sure he is gonna get to sell me a couple of my planed purchases this year
