Hi everyone,
I have a Rem 700 single shot sitting in a Boyds Pro-Varmint stock that has been inletted for a DBM. I'm looking to fill this rather large expanse and am looking for some advice.
My goal is multi-fold.
1)Strengthen the stock. My theory is that this large empty spot is not ideal for consistent shooting.
2)Improve the look of the stock. The big hole is...well...a big hole. The stock is grey in color, so the color of Devcon would match pretty well.
3)Improve the 'handling' of the stock. This is a big heavy benchrest-eque rifle used solely for my pleasure...i.e. I don't have weight limits to meet, but find it awkward on the hand when I grip the rifle in that location.
My first thought is to cut a piece of 2x4 or the likes to approximate size, and to devcon it in place on all sides. I'm thinking that would work, but probably look pretty poor. My other thought was to fill the whole space with a mix of devcon and pieces of threaded rod (of which I have a bunch).
Both of these thoughts have the challenge of how to achieve a nice smooth surface along the underside of the stock. The underside is not flat, but rather curved. The action is currently bedded into the stock, so I won't need to go 'all the way up' to the action if I don't need to.
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks everyone,
Cal.
