Hi all,

Been looking at a couple options lately for a small pistol vault/safe, there seems to be plenty out there but not a whole lot of reviews. Just curious to hear some recommendations.

I picked up the Stack On "Extra Wide" safe with the combination key pad. I bolted it to the top of my Stack On Ammo Locker which is bolted in to the concrete floor of my garage.
All of my powder, primers, finished ammo and factory ammo go in the safe, along with a few pistols. Keys for the locker go in the safe, along with some other pistols I don't use as often. Really Nice setup.

I guess you need to provide some more details. Are you looking for safe safe, or just a secure storage container.

Is speed of access a concern, or just security.

How many pistols do you need to fit in there?

Whats your budget?

For a 'go to' pistol safe, i like things that use biometric or electronic combination. They usually also have a keyed back up. As for the quality of construction, in my case I am worried more about little fingers than theft or fire, so a Costco Pistol sized Sentry Safe fit the bill just fine, on sale for under 100.

I'm in the same boat. My primary concern is keeping it safe from the kids. Only really needs to hold 1 standard size pistol. This would be something separate from my proper safe that I keep my hunting kit locked in. Doesn't need to be in my nightstand or anything, but somewhat accessible isn't a bad thing.

I picked up an Amazon brand small safe for something like $85, free shipping. I keep everything trigger locked, holds two pistols in factory cases, would fit ammo but I keep it separate. 4 AA batteries, 2 backup keys, 4-6 digit code. I bolted it to the wall with some supplied hardware. If someone wants your stuff bad enough, they’ll get it. I just wanted a lockable case I could bolt down. Once I get into long guns I’ll probably check out Cabela’s larger fire rated options.

Got a stack on 8 gun safe myself. Shelved most of it(pita), lit interior with with external switch(another pita), weighted it down with serious ass barstock(picture a couple 2x4's in steel, that I cut down), and lots of huge lag bolts tying her down.

Basically a safe will only slow down someone who wants in, maybe stop a crack head though(I said maybe). I went the mechanical combination route which is usually very reliable(have read of some troubles via the electronic route).

In the end the amount of space and protection you want will dictate the price. Wish I went a little bigger, and fireproof.

I waited till I could afford a big one and use it for more than just guns, Cabelas had the Jr Fat Boy on sale last spring, $500 off regular price, I wired it with led lights and a fridge door switch so its like daylight when you open it up, at 760lbs empty plus bolted to the rec room floor its not going anywhere soon.

Hi all,

Buy a bigger one than you think you need (unless this is a secondary unit), I guarantee you will end up with more guns than you expect. If the safe is not explicitly called a 'gun safe' in its description you should keep everything trigger locked if you worry about spurious prosecution on unsafe storage charges. If it is called a 'gun safe' then you are good to go without trigger locks. Stupid, yes, but then so are the rest of our firearms laws and that doesn't stop police from laying charges based on them.

Small ones need to be bolted down, otherwise they are just a portable container.

Says whom?

Well, a small safe is easily carried away by a thief unless it is full of very heavy stuff. It really depends on if you are looking to meet the requirements of the firearms act or if you expect a safe to actually stop a thief. Myself, I only am looking to avoid the gestapo and I expect very little to stop a determined thief, so I use the Costco free standing gun safe(s) and a large cabinet for my non-restricteds. They keep kids out (even though my kids are well trained in safe gun handling) and meet the letter of the law and that is all I expect of them.
