hey everyone,

i have a pre 64 30-30 winchester that i want to refinish the wood on. the previous owner refinished it with stain and a glossy lacker some 20 years ago. i want to bring the walnut back to a more eye pleasing state. what would you recomend would be the best way to go about doing this??? mainly, should i just strip it and tung oil it or should i incorporated a walnut stain??

any advice or prefered proceedures would be greatly appreciated as i really want to do this right.:D

Take a look at the wood after it has been preped and you will know if you want to have it a bit darker (stain) or not.
After the finish sand make sure to use T.S.P. to clean it to remove all the dust from the wood.

the screws that hold the stock on are so low set and fine that im afraid i will strip them. is it smart to finish the stock while its still on the rifle? obviously taking great care in avoiding to touch anything metal.

I refinished a couple of '94's. If you can find one, get a Birchwood Casey's Stock Refinishing Kit. It has walnut stain, wood filler, and Tru-oil, which is a quick-dry linseed finish. It is foolproof. The stuff is all available separately as well. The kit also has sandpaper, steel wool, and instructions.
And yes, remove the stock.

Wood is wood. Use the same products and techniques you do for fine furniture. You will, most assuredly, have to remove the stock and the butt plate first.
"...glossy lacker..." You'll need to be sure it is lacquer, then use a lacquer remover. No big deal. Crappy Tire will have everything you need.
Let us know if you need help tracking bubba down. The value dropped in half when he put lacquer on the stock.
