Advice on Rimfire Rifles

Hi all, I know next to nothing about rimfire rifles so I'm hoping somebody can help me out.

I trained on the FNC1A1 in the forces and had a lot of fun with that rifle, and I'm wondering if there is anything in rimfire that has similar ergonomics? What I loved about the FN was the reliability and how simple it was mechanically. It was so easy to take down to clean and maintain without tools. I know that the for 10/22s you need screwdrivers and such and I really don't want to deal with that.

I'd also like to have something fun with rails so I can put lights and optics on it. Anyways, let me know what you think. Thanks.
 
I have an FN FAL and there is nothing like it in the rimfire world. I would go the 10/22 route just because of the huge aftermarket support for it. it isn't particularly accurate, nor is it cosmetically endearing, but it is quite reliable and a few companies make chassis kits for them to dress them up a bit with the rails you want. it isn't exactly the gun you were looking for, but it is the gun for you.
 
OK, thanks guys. That's a bit of a bummer though, especially because I know that there are rifles in other calibres which are very easy to take apart.
 
Eh, the reason the gun you trained with is like that, is because its a military firearm, a battle rifle. There are no military .22's , so I DO LOVE your line of thought, its a great one, but it wont pan out.

I understand , you are set on a .22, but for what you are looking for, get an SKS or an M305(M1a clone) You can fully strip them down with what comes in the butt of the stock (Both of them)

As for .22, the only thing I can think of, is the SR 22 by ruger (Uses the inside of a 10/22 with a more AR style shell, rails and alll that), if you find one, it will be 600 or more but an awesome rifle, and SKS is 200 dollars and ammo (Non corrosive) IS $170 for 500. The M305 will be about 500, and around 50 cents a round or less, but its 7.62 x 39 (I beleive the same round as the gun you trained with, I am unfamiliar so I cannot say for sure) and a very good round, accurate and good at 500 yards or even more.

I bought .22's , shot guns, rifles, then finally bought an SKS, I instantly questioned why I didnt buy one sooner, and tell everyone to make that their first gun.


I might be yapping a bunch of pointless #### as you may already have rifles :D Whatever you end up going with , safe shooting and enjoy.

I recently acquired a 10/22, not by choice (long story). Anyway, after getting it, I decided to take it apart. Found instructions on the net. It was easier than I expected. Minimal tools required. Ive taken it to the range, along with a new bolt action 22 Ruger American that uses the same magazine. I prefer the Bolt action, but the 10/22 is a good fun gun. A new basic 10/22 can be had for less than $300. It may not be the best 22 in the world, but with all the available accessories it can be fun to own.

I'm one of those old farts who's still grandfathered & still own a couple of FN/FAL's. I love those guns, and I'd love to be able to shoot them, but it's not possible to get a permit to take one to the range.

As other have said, there is no rimfire equivalent of the FAL, but even the military-looking .22's are in peril at the moment. As you know, the RCMP is busily prohibiting all kinds of guns, through re-classification & deeming guns "variants" of previously-prohibited firearms. At this point, NOTHING is safe, particularly anything semi-automatic.

Probably the safest bet, as others have said, is to get a Ruger 10/22 (prohibiting those would likely result in a palace revolt, as there are probably millions of them in Canada) and look at some of the "black rifle" kits out there. One in particular that I like is the Marauder (or whatever it's called now) kit that turns a 10/22 into an exact replica of the HK G-36. Fantastic workmanship in these kits, as tight and solid as the real thing (identical weight, balance, dimensions, etc.), and they're not expensive - you get the handling and experience of a real G-36 (I've shot the real thing, BTW) in a non-restricted, .22LR (cheap to shoot) platform.

I wish there was an AR-15 equivalent, but the only ones out there that are reasonably accurate are currently restricted...and may soon (very soon) be moved by the RCMP to the prohibited list. As per the NFA Freedom of Information request, I hear that the Ruger SR22 and the Remington 597VTR are on the RCMP's "we plan on banning this soon list" . The RCMP consider them M16/AR-15 "variants"...

I have recently bought the Ruger SR-22 Assault Rifle. It was super hard to find at first but much worth the time I spent looking for it. It is a super easy gun as far as the action etc. I had a bit of jamming and ejection issues to start off but after taking it apart and cleaning it I now have not issues with it and have a lot of fun with it at the range weekly. The biggest bonus is it does not break the bank to shoot. If your going to buy a 22 you can't go wrong with it. If you want one I know a place that has 2 in stock which are the only ones in western canada that have it. Happy Shooting
 
Yah thats what I heard the rcmp like to do but i have check with the local police there is no problem lol It just looks like one so it's not classified as an assault rifle.
 
Yeah, I remember that. We had them set up so we could shoot in the basement at our armory. That was the first time I ever shot and I was pretty good and loved it. They told me I should try being a sniper.

Holy ####. I was just taking the piss when I made that assault rifle comment. Little did I know the depths of the RCMP's ignorance when it comes down to it. This excerpt is from an RCMP document. Probably old news to many on CGN, but it was news to me. Highlighted portions added by me. Now, the RCMP have redacted a big chunk after the "Less accurate copies will not be effected", but why even list the likes of the SR-22, or 597 VTR, if they weren't at some point considering it?
