So, the kid's been pretty good and I asked him what he'd like as a reward...being my kid he asked for a gun! :d He's happy with his hunting rifle, and his shotgun, as well as his modified Ruger SP-01...but a 1911 would be really sweet, Dad! Well, he'd like it full size, 9mm, accurate, and reliable. Amongst the reasonably priced "production" 1911s that have a good reputation, online anyway, we narrowed it down to the Sig Sauer Traditional Match Elite, the Remington R1 Enhanced, and the Smith & Wesson SW1911 Pro Series. I'm hoping some of you with 1911 expertise and experience can help me with your opinions and advice...especially those of you that own or have shot some of these 1911s. Your help is very greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! :)

I shoot a modestly large amount 1911 classic ipsc division.
Id take a springfield or sti frame before i touched a sw/sig
Ive done 12k rounds this summer and havent touch the pistol yet, the 1911 still locks up tigher than a new shadow.
Springfield target loaded 9mm

Out of those 3 choices, my preference is remington.

A buddy has a sw pro in 9mm, and it has a custom rear sight cut so hes stuck with fixed sights (well not stuck, but hard to source)
Its a good choice but not a 2000$ pistol that they sell them for. Sti trojan is miles ahead for 400$ less.
Any sig up to 1400$ ive held has had a terrible frame/slide fitment.
The two should lockup tight for any pistol 1000$ or more. Sig is bottom barrel for quality imo.

Never held an r1' but i have the most confidence in remington in your sons selection.

Now if you want to consider a great performing 1911, talk to the action competition guys where we drop 40000rounds a season and replace extractors and springs between seasons and what brands require more/less :)

I have the Remington R1 Enhanced and I really really like it. My daughter loves it even though its probably a bit heavy for her. But, why buy one 1911 when you can buy two? I've also got the Browning Black Label 22. Excellent quality. Great fun. Cheap to shoot. The two look great in the case together and makes a nice versatile package to bring to the range.

Of your 3 picks I would be happy with any one...the R1 is the more traditional looking ...but the S&W and sig are very fine indeed...kinda depends on your budget...I am however a STI fan..have never shot or handled a bad one...jmho

Okay, so the Remington of those three, but look hard at STI and Springfield...thanks for your replies so far!! I'm a revolver and CZ Shadow shooter, so this 1911 stuff isn't familiar to me.

I handled an R1 Enhanced 9mm at CSC and it was very nice. Adjustable rear sight, fiber front, and the trigger was pretty decent (on par with my STI Spartan).

One consideration that applies no matter what 1911 you buy, if you want to shoot classic division IPSC with the gun and run a techwell XT magwell, you need to have a bomar style rear sight. With novak style and the big magwell you will not fit the gun in the box.

I like springfields and STIs myself. I've won alot of matches with my STI and the springfields are well thought of in the states. As a bonus they all have series 70 trigger and not the stupid series 80 that all 3 brands you listed have.

For me to buy a 1911 and not get it in .45ACP just feels so wrong.

If you're looking for 9mm it's odd to me you want a 1911 but that's just me lol.

Good luck with your find.

There are also lots of very fine .40 cal 1911's.....if he likes a little snap..and wants something cheaper to run than .45...it's a good choice...confirmed .40 fan here...lots of threads on this debate...

.40 1911s have a habit of running like garbage though. Not all of them but a much higher percentage than 9mm or .45 ones. I would not recommend a 1911 in .40 unless you are competing and understand you are probably going to need to tune it or run 10mmish length reloaded ammo.

Running an omega .40 right now....no issues to date and super accurate...had a very fine all stainless 16-40 limited para...flawless...I know some folks have had issues...but honestly ...not me..and it seems all pistols in all calibers have issues for some...just reading the forums here...jmho

I have an omega .40 as well, it wouldnt shoot a whole mag without jamming before I sent it to my smith. Same thing with my friends omega in .40. Then there is the 8ish 9mm 1911s between me and my friends that have all worked fine right out of the box.

Like I said, there will always be guns that work just fine, but ask anyone who shoots 1911s or knows 1911s and they will tell you a gun in .40 has a much higher likely hood of being a pain in the ass than either of the other two calibers.
