Hi everyone
I am currently in the market for a new rifle i mostly have service surplus rifles I am looking for something for long distance and something i can put a scope on
I haven't hunted in many years i enjoy target shooting more but just in case i want something i can use to hunt with to. I am also looking for something that's not to expensive. I have been thinking about the savage axis anybody else have any suggestions

For 400 id stick with the milsurps man. Your probably not going to get anything else very remarkable for that kind of cash. Tradex has the CG63 target rifles for around that much and the 6.5x55 is a great long range target round. i cant talk about hunting with the swede because i havent although im sure lots of people do.

Series 1 Weatherby Vanguards are at blow out prices of late to make room for the S2's trickling in. You just may find one for your desired budget.

Far better gun than a savage axis. (IMO, of course) (but true.. ;) )

I guess ill retract my previous recomendation as the CG63 list for almost $500 and probably
wont be the easiest rifle to scope. They are tack drivers though if you want to shoot long range and like quality built rifles

I'd say around 400$ range

Keep saving your money until you have a bigger budget.

edited to add: Im not being an A-hole, just telling you, you wont be satisfied spending your hard earned money on something that price when you can save a little more and be very happy with your purchase. Last year I finally bought a gun I saved 5 years for, and even then only the high Canadian dollar finally helped me out.

An empty texas micky bottle makes a fine piggy bank for boom sticks.

Could look around for a decent secondhand rifle with good bones and improve on it... If you're looking for guaranteed accuracy I would agree with the post above and save up some more and buy a new bolt action with a proven test target.

+1

I got my Vanguard (when the S2 wasn't out yet) for $550 including mounted scope, sling and soft case.

What do you intend to hunt?

If you want big game, your caliber options are .308 or 7.62mm mil surp in that price range.

As others have mentioned, SKS or other eastern mil sur. otherwise, find a Savage Axis or Stevens 200 package used.

got no suggestions for cheap ####e for you, I just don't deal it in! Take the advise from other's. Buy at least mid-way quality+ when you can afford it, be happy with your purchase, buy it once, maybe twice, forget about upgrading from junk I to junk II to junk III and on to to the sweet pea! You won't regreat it, believe me!

Nothing wrong with a stevens 200 or a savage axis/edge.. if looks and brand name appeal don't matter to you anyways.
Put on a half decent scope and find the right load and they will shoot as well as guns costing twice as much that have pretty shiny stocks and fancy marketing schemes.
Spend the 90 bucks or so on upgrading to an aftermarket trigger if you want to shoot accurately though.
Also get on the internet and learn how to glass bed the action to the stock yourself.
Don't need to spend a mint to have fun.

thats true i was at the range not to long ago and there were guys there with 1000$ rifles with big bad scopes i was shooting my 300$ 30 30 lever action (iron sights) and getting better groups then them at 100 meters the rifle isnt the only thing that has to be accurate i guess it depends on how much fun i want to have

If you get even a budget priced bolt action such as the stevens/savage it will have far more accuracy potential then the 30/30. The lever guns are great and certianly fill a role, but the design simply cannot provide top accuracy.
Thats awsome that you outshot those guys with it though, if you did well with it you will see big improvement with a scoped, modern bolt action firing an accurate load.
You are likely shooting to the maximum accuracy potential of your lever gun, and target shooting is only truly rewarding when the gun is capable of better accuracy than the shooter.
