I've narrowed my search down to
Remington 870 Express combo with 20" rifled, and 26" barrels, for 480 dollars,
Or
Mossberg 500 with a 24" ad 28" barrels for 310 dollars.

Is the Remington worth the extra couple hundred bucks, and overall what will I be more happy with?

Thanks guys!

3 basic rules in a shotgun purchase.

:shotgun:Boom!
If you are planing on hunting with the shotgun then go for the Remington.
:shotgun:Boom!!
If you are planning for the SHTF scenerio then you want a Mossberg.
:shotgun:Boom!!!
If you want to have the best of the semi-auto then hands down it's a Benelli.
Just like the comercial!

I've used both, but own a Mossy 500 (circa-older then dirt). To me they feel more or less the same. I do like the tang safety on the 500.

This is a working gun, mainly deer; so I won't be modding it too much. If you plan on modding it to make it black and ###y; Go Remington, else save your money for ammo and go Mossy.

nah, not gonna mod it, just want a reliable good feeling gun. Thanks for your advice!

My opinion is to pass on the rough and rust-prone 870 Express and go with the 870 Wingmaster, which is still a quality product. You might have to hold-off on your slug barrel for a while, but there's no reason you can't shoot rifled slugs through a 28" smooth bore.

What kind of birding? Are you talking upland, waterfowl (steel & other non-toxic shot!), or both? A modern gun with screw in chokes is a pretty versatile tool, but for waterfowling all you need is a mod choke rated for steel and you're good to go.

The 870 Wingmaster is great... Have used one for 20 years..still looks new. Good wood, great finish not one problem. Came with a 20 inch slug barrel. Graduated from 25 to 100 yards and a 28 inch modified. The slugs will group at 50 yards three shots in a 4 inch circle. Federal was the tightest followed by winchester. Just plain old 2 3/4 inch slugs.
Would I buy another ? Yes !!!
After thought ..Had a BT99 Browning for trap..great gun but the 870 VENT RIB WINGMASTER worked better for me. Makes no sense but the proof was the clay birds busting. Sold the BT99 kept the Wingmaster.

They are both good for the price. Most gun store would have both in stock, pick them both up and they will speak to you.

Now should I get a F150 or a silverado.....LOL J/K.

Thanks for the posts guys, I'm going to be trying both upland game, and waterfowl.
I'm heading to check them out this week, so hopefully one will feel better.

Hey guys, update.
Went to the store, the only Mossberg they had was the 88 security 24 inch barrel. It was a piece of ####.
Checked out the Remington 870 express synthetic 18 incher.
Loved it.

Decided, what the hell, Can always buy a longer barrel for it, so, I bought it.

Pics to come later!

Congrats! The 870 Express is better finished compared to the Mossberg. Does that come with a mag plug installed i.e. if/when you decide to take that out for hunting? Think the shotgun will balance better for Wingshooting with that mag extension removed.....

Nope, No mag plug. I think I'll just cut a piece of dowel to fit for when i gotta limit the capacity.
I'm going on a boys weekend shooting gophers with my brother, so I will be sure to take some pics and all that good stuff!
