Please bear with me, I've been away from black rifles for almost 20 years...the last one I handled was a C7 and there were no such considerations.

In any case, I've just recently completed my PAL and RPAL to get back in the game (application pending) and I'm contemplating the purchase of my first black rifle.

I have a sizable budget set aside for this purpose, but (like so many of you I'm sure) I keep on bumping up against the Restricted classification on the ones I'm most interested in. Though I intend to shoot at a range, I own some property in cottage country and want to be able to legally shoot there too.

So that's limiting me to looking at non-restricted rifles.

So that brings me to the point of the thread. Some semi-auto black rifles have 5 round limits, and some seem to have 10 round limits (though to muddy the water further, from what I've seen the ones that have 10 round limits are often sold with 5 round pinned mags).

10 rounds vs. 5 has an obvious appeal, and all other things being equal (or close) I'd shortlist the best black rifles that are 10 round eligible.

I just can't figure out definitively which ones those are, and why.

Thanks in advance for any guidance in this regard.

Best,

CC

Good information, thanks guys.

I also read about the Kriss Super V .45 ACP, that shoots traditional pistol rounds and consequently get the 10 round limit as well.

Are there others in this category?

Thanks,

Certain beretta CX4 storm rifles run on legal pistol mags.

The key is that the mag be stamped or identified as a pistol mag

Yeah there are, but you are into pistol caliber carbines now not black rifles. Some examples are: Kriss Super V as said, Beretta CX4 Storm (rebarreled to 18.5 for unrestricted status), Keltec Sub 2000, Hipoint Carbine, Hera/Roni Pistol Conversion Kits, exc.

A Robinson Arms 10 round 7.62X39 pistol mag will legally hold 11 6.8spc rounds...

I pack a non-restricted XCR-L with uppers in 223 = 10 round pistol mags and 6.8spc = 11 round pistol mags.

Any rifle designed to accept STANAG mags should be able to accept the LAR line of .223, 7.62x39 mags.

- AR15, ACR, XCR, SCAR, Keltec SU16 and so on...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STANAG_magazine

There are rifles that have had adapters made to accept STANAG mags.

- VZ and CZ 58 and 858 lines...

And of course any rifle that by design takes a pistol mag...

- Cx4 Storm

To clarify, magazines designed for semi-auto rifles are limitted to 5 rounds. Magazines designed for pistols are limitted to 10 rounds. If you have a rifle that accepts pistol magazines, then you are good to go. Magazines are regulated seperately and what the magazine was designed for is what sets the capacity limit. If a pistol magazine happens to fit into a rifle, it does not become illegal.

So, if you want a non-restricted rifle that is capable of using ten round LAR-15 pistol mags, without modification or adapters, take a look at the XCR in 223, 7.62x39 or 6.8 with an 18.6 barrel.

Great explanation, thank you.

Yes, it looks like the XCR in 7.62 (or .223) is at the top of my list currently. The fact that it is good to go right out of the box is a big plus.

All the ones listed above and don't forget to add the Armalite AR-180B ($1000-$1500 used) to the list.

I used to have an AR180-B and enjoyed shooting it. Was fairly accurate, took AR mags, Piston operated, non-restricted. I still regret selling it. If you can find one they are fun.

If you don't mind pistol cartridges, I don't really think of my Sub-2000 as a black rifle but it can legally use 10 round pistol mags and is non-restricted. It folds and can be carried in a backpack or in the quad box. It is also pretty cheap and goes for around $600 new.

Good luck

I just be careful with this. Camp Cook is in BC, and I don't know the hunting regs there, but in Saskatchewan, under the Hunting Regs, it is illegal to hunt with a semi auto with more than 5 rounds for game animals.

So the 10 rounder is good for coyotes, but don't take it hunting.

Not that my 6.8 XCR has needed more than 1 shot on a deer yet.... heh.
