Advice Please: New Shotgun for Home Defence and 3-gun (Eventually)

Hi,

I would like to purchase a new shotgun that (hopefully) serves two purposes: home defence and 3-gun. I have no experience with 3-gun other than what i've read or seen on you tube, but think it is amazing! I would like to get into this in the future but want to purchase a shotgun in the near-term for home defence.

1. Is an ~18 inch barrel used in 3-gun?
2. Any recommendations for a good quality pump action shotgun? I was thinking of something like the Rem 870 or similar but can't stomach the cost of a Benelli-type multi-thousand dollar shotgun at this point. (I do own a Benelli SBE2 w/ ~28" barrel.)

Homes can be difficult to take down....especially angry and pissed off ones, you know the ones, where handy Andy has been at the home renovating and remodelling. I would suggest getting the biggest capacity shotty you can find....probably with a bayo attachment as well. Start with the soft structures first....like Windows and such. That may be enough to deter the residence. If not you might have to start in with the vitals....like electrical and plumbing systems....once the home starts to leak, they usually give up. That's my take anyways.

I really can't speak to the 3 gun part....others more qualified than myself should probably speak to that.

What if the house is all high on Windex or orange scented floor cleaner (or God forbid a combo of both!!).
Add to that the possibility of it wearing thick layers like vinyl siding or a brick veneer...

Would you still recommend a shotty?

Well, in that case you'll have to do something more drastic. Your gonna have to go at its food source. Likke propane of natural gas system. There will be significant spall. If you had a rifled barrel and used sabots at distance...you might be ok. I would normally suggest a rifle at that point though!

For 3 gun competition, the 18.5" barrel is fine. For a pump, simplest answer is, most people will run the Rem 870 or the Mossberg 500/590A1. Either ghost ring or some kind of red dot sight.
 
Why are you taking the thread off track?
Primary concern was home defence.
I thought we were having productive conversation on the topic.


But I'm always game for a good thread drift.

18.5 is ok only if you have chokes. hard to knock down heavy steel or longer range steel with a cyl bore.
Ghost ring sights are slower than a vent rib for target acquisition on the clock. They are good for slugs, but that only makes up a couple % of all targets in a match.
Red dot may put you in open division depending on the match's rules.
 
And you can shoot slugs accurately enough to hit anything an MD can throw at you using a vent rib. That's about the only thing that usually goes well for me when I shoot a match with a shotty :cool:

For the other question, using the phrase "Hut of brown now sit down" helps protect me from an overly aggressive home.
 
Don't listen to all people on youtube, 3 gun nation, etc who recommend a semi-auto SG for 3 gun and home defense.

Dual wielding pumps is where it's at. Here's a real life example:

Huh...the.op got some pretty sage and honest advice in the second post...you know, most people are afraid to discuss home defense publically and its a real problem these days....

We havent even talked about carbon monoxide or radon yet....these homes are trying to kill us every chance they get.....we need to take a stand

Well, don't forget the slippery tub, bad wiring, attack ceiling fan, finger crushing drawers and exploding toilets!
 
The thread drift is probably because there are a billion other threads, youtube videos, articles and essays online covering this exact topic.
Easy search.

I, for one, want to know more about defending ourselves from killer homes.
