I have bought and shot dozens and dozens of pistols and revolvers. If you're looking for a practical "service" handgun you might need on a dark day:
#1 SIG P226, German, excellent / used (or a new one if you can) no rails would be my first choice.
#2 CZ75 (mine is an Omega) is choice 2, reasons stated by others
#3 If it needs to be small, the German SIG P239 (sorry, boys, the American ones aren't in my safe any more and won't be back). Slightly larger than a Walther PP and much more potent.
Caliber: I'd suggest 9mm because you can practice comfortably, and share ammo with your Sterlings. I have a lot of other calibers and always come back to 9mm.
Even though he Browning Hi Power is single action, I found it less accurate in my hand than the SIG or CZ. It's what fits your hand, though I also think you should own one to go with your Sterling. Nobody should be down to just one handgun. It feels wrong somehow. It even sounds awful.
I enjoy the 39 series from S&W but most are prohibited. Accurate, reliable, and about the same size as the SIG P239. Harder to get a holster for ... and a "service" gun should certainly have a holster and a two mag holder for the other side.
Try the HK P7 PSP for fit and function. You can try mine if you come to Calgary -- even though it's not on the list above, I'm keeping mine. Along with a bunch of others that aren't first choice, but do provide variety and entertainment.
Last, I'd insist that you add a high quality .22, pistol or revolver, to your 9mm service piece. I'll always have one of those, too.
