Advice quick!!

New or used? If it's new that seems a little expensive, then again considering how few are available I'd be willing to slightly overpay for one.
 
I can't comment on price but otherwise either is a nice choice.

Questions to ask yourself are:

  • Have you had the chance to try a S&W as well? Lots of us prefer the S&W trigger over the Ruger one. If you have not shot a S&W already you should hold off until you try one to get a comparison.
  • Are you considering using the gun only as a range toy or will you be using it for competitions where you need to be able to do fast draws from a holster? If "yes" to competitions then hold out for a shorter barrel. The absence of that last 1.8 inches makes a big difference to clearing the holster more easily.
 
Brand new. Would just be for fun. From what I've read a spring change makes the trigger OK. I would prefer the 4.2 for sure. Should sleep on it but....
If I did find a 4.2" I could shoot it more sportingly for sure, where as this monster would not work so well.
 
if you want the 4.2 and are willing to pay $800.00 i would hold off, as you will find that
if you just want to buy a new gun and this is close enough, and you don't mind the price than have at er!
 
For $900 you can buy a new S&W 686 plus the 7 shot version but it is 6 inch. This is at the gun dealer in McAdam N.B. non sponsor here. I have had a few dealings with them they are good. To see the gun find their web site w ww.thegundealer.net choose firearms on the left, choose handguns, choose new hand guns. The trouble is the Ruger stock is like 2 year wait and the dealer gets it and when it is gone he has no clue when the next one is coming in. Thank the greatest gun salesman of all time, Mr. Obama.
 
"...$800 for a GP100?...No..." Absolutely. Love mine, but it ain't worth $800.
"...$800 is Smith money..." No, but it's close to Python money.
"...prefer the S&W trigger..." Irrelevant as every new firearm requires a trigger job. (Except Pythons. Python triggers are done in the factory. S'why they're so pricey.) It's much easier to do the trigger on a Ruger than it is a Smith too. No special tools required.
 
Is this plus tax and shipping and gun polishing charge and mandatory service contract, or all in? Eight hundred looks like the absolute maximum I would pay for a new retail GP100.

The 152mm barrel model is most definitely not seeing the demand that the 106mm one is (reasons above), but they do sell fairly quickly anyway at a reasonable price (no more than $650). The shorty is one that you might be able to recoup (or even make a slight profit) on the EE.

If it's not the one you want, that's probably too high. Unless you'd be satisfied with it as a place-holder, and sell it at a bit of a loss when you locate the other one. Eyes open.

The wait is what gets me, I hate waiting period. But I was eager to buy since it's the 1st one I have ever seem in person here. I really liked the feel of it.

Thanks, I don't have access to the EE, but from all the comments I see I'm not missing much.
I do have a Python waiting for me that I can buy but don't want it to shoot a ton, more if a collector piece with occasional shooting. That's why the Ruger seems to be a good modern workhorse.

Get access to the EE, just because some knobs like to rant about a few of the prices does not mean there aren't good and fair deals to be had.

+1 found a real nice barely used S&W 686-3 for 680$, came with 2 grips original box and all.
For wheel guns i much prefer smith over ruger, but this is personnal taste only.
