Advice sought for a used rifle for Elk, deer

"....300 kicked me hard..." So will a 7mm Rem.
"...thinking the 7mmRM as an awesome all-around gun..." So is a .30-06. There's no game in North America that requires a magnum of any kind to kill.

I think you are under the impression that because it says Magnum on the barrel it must kick way more. The 7mm RM may kick slightly more or sometimes less than the 06 depending on the bullet selection. Sometimes when wanting to reach way out a 7mm with a smaller grain bullet will produce more energy past 200 yards while producing less recoil on the shooter. I find the 7mm RM to be a pussy cat depending on the firearm and the load of course.

"...thinking the 7mmRM as an awesome all-around gun..." So is a .30-06. There's no game in North America that requires a magnum of any kind to kill. Magnums are the result of what is likely the most successful marketing camaign in history. Too much felt recoil to be fun to shoot. If it's not fun to shoot, you'll think twice about practicing with it. (Ammo costs aside.) And since you haven't shot in 15 years, you'll need to relearn how to shoot and learn the ballistics of whatever cartridge you end up buying. Espcially for antelope(usually shot with 6mm's and the like.)

Sorry, I think I gave the wrong impression - the last time I hunted big game was 15 yrs ago, at least with a rifle. Been doing archery more recently, but also have been shooting rifles since that time (including .300 WM and .300 RUM, among other rifles). Haven't been hunting with one lately, though.

Ecoheliguy - sound advice. I am certain, I didn't check the video link but know the ways to tell. I am absolutely certain I am left eye dominant (my son is right handed but shoots bow LH now that we figured that out correctly - and he's much better for it).

I did end up getting the rifle, now I'm looking forward to trying it out.
