Advice would be appreciated.

That Lakefield MKII is identical to most of the new Savage MKII's, a fantastic rifle and perfect for a new shooter. I think the light recoil of a .22 makes the pellet gun idea a waste of money myself. If the kid is afraid of a .22, the recoil and noise of a pellet gun is going to turn him off as well. Use eyes and ears, keep an eye on his muzzle control, and have fun! My boys (2 18yrs, and a 15) all started with the .22, now they are shooters for life!

Thanks Squirrelshooter, I'll check with Numerich or Brownells for the triggerguard.
He's as smart and responsible kid and after a brief intro with a bb or pellet gun I would have no problem setting him up for an hour of plinking but our "subburban" homestead make's that a no-no. So if we we go to a range...why not go "full" RAMBO .22 llr;)

I started both my boys with a very accurate pellet rifle. When they became quite proficient and turned the age of 9 I believe it was, I got a
high quality pellet pistol and proceeded to teach them what trigger control was really all about. After that I gave each of them a BRNO .22 LR with a decent
scope and went every weekend to shoot with them pretty much all summer for several years.

When it came time to hunt deer and moose, I let the older one have a first crack with my 7x57 and it was no problem...plus he was hooked for life.
The younger son became old enough to hunt deer and moose around the time I bought a .30/06 Sako Mannlicher for the eldest, and that year saw both sons
shoot their moose virtually at the same time...one with his 30/06 and the other with my 7x57. Both moose just dropped and the work began.

Today both boys are accomplished rifle shots and they have begun teaching their boys as well as girls in the same manner as I had done.

Worked for me.
