i have been planing a precision rifle build for quite some time now. i have lots of the components in place. now i seem to be at a stand still when it comes to choosing a stock. i am planning on building an f-class rifle, so to speak. will be more informal f-class/benchrest, long range paper puncher. i have been thinking mcmillan tooley mbr, or f-class stock. i have also looked at the robertson f-class stock. the problem seems to be that i have never built a rifle like this before. i am unsure if i need all the adjustable stuff like cheek piece and but plate, or should i not worry about that for now. any help would be greatly appreciated

I was in the same boat as you a year or so ago. I went with a Robertson composites stock. Ian even arranged the build for me.The gunsmithing was outstanding. I was out the other day and I shot a 10 shot group at 600 yards. The group measured 2 1/4 inches with 8 of the shots landing inside the 1 1/2 inch mark.
A lot of this depends on personal choice and what you want the finished rifle to be "best" at. Caliber? are you trying to fit rules for a specific class? If you are planning on shooting from a bipod like F/Tr and Precision, I'd recommend a Robertson Tac. Nice and stiff, and very good ergonomics for shooting off your belly on the ground. If you plan on shooting from a front rest off a bench then a Robertson F Class, or GB f class would be great options, as would an MBR. Fully adjustable stocks add weight- I'd opt for a fixed butt, and an adjustable cheek piece.
You can't go wrong with a Robertson.
As an F-Class shooter, all I can say is make sure you invest in a stock that is ergonomically designed for the type of shooting you plan to do. Form and function go hand in hand. If you plan on using a pedestal rest, get something that have parallel surfaces on the shoulder and forestock. Make sure you have proper length of pull for prone positioning, and adjustable cheek pieces are not required. (These tend to be shot almost free-recoil)
The folks at Robertson are pros and WILL help you in this regard. (have a look at the GBF stock!!)

thanks for the advice so far. my plan is to stay in the rules for open f-class. i am building a 6mmbr and my plan is to shoot f-class some day. the worry i have is that i will start out basic, no options, and then wish i had them in the end. it seems that comfort and ergonomics are the key to accuracy. my plan is to shoot off of a front rest, rear bag. i think i will get in touch with robertson and let them help guide me through this.

Kawiguy, there is a shooter with the Manitoba PRA (CGN dude "Prairieguy") that has a #####in F-Open rig with a Robertson Stock. His mortal name is Les. He has a 6BR and an awesome 7mm that he uses in F-Open. He would be a good fellow to hook up with and discuss both equipment and coming out and shooting. He uses a Robertson stock (a GBF if I recall correctly) and can help you get in touch with the organized F-Class shooting in your parts. There is a fantastic range in Winnipeg and these guys get together there on a fairly regular basis. Also, you are not too terribly far from the Northstar range at Nokomis Sk. where they have more fantastic F-Class matches.
