I am hoping someone can help me on a good powder and charge range for a 240 grain bullet for a 44mag handgun. I'm looking for a sissy load for my wife so she can comftorably shoot it too. Even if it is a 44 special load that would be great. I tried IMR 4227 13.3 grains, the min load it suggested but there seems to be un burnt powder left and I guess it is not a good powder to be trying to be working min loads with. thanks guys!!

If you are having problems with unburnt powder try using a magnum primer.

Despite leaving the guns a little dirty, I've had good luck with Unique. The Lyman manual recommends a starting loads of 6 grs in .44 Special cases, and 9 in .44 magnum cases with cast 245 gr bullets, and 10 grs with jacketed 240 gr bullets in .44 magnum brass. Again I would use a magnum primer to ensure complete ignition.

you can use 231 from 6 right up to 11 grains- right now i'm running about 8- little warmer than 44 special top end, but not to 44 mag velocities yet-240 grain lead

Well if your wife wants to shoot a .44 mag, she's obviously not the sissy in the family! For Cowboy Action competition I like 5.3 grains of W231 pushing a 240 grain LSWC. It gives me about 640 fps out of my Ruger Vaquero and will knock down steel reactive targets. If you want something with a bit more juice I'd recommend 7.2 grains of Unique pushing a 240 grain LSWC, which gives me about 920 fps out of my Vaqueros. Keeping under 1,000 fps helps minimize the leading of the barrel unless you want to go with gas checks.

Using the 240 gr cast bullet you've mentioned, what's worked well for me is; for a light indoor gallery type load, 5 grs of Bullseye or 8.5 grs of Unique for a target load.

Have you tried Clays powder yet? My brother shoots alltogether too many .44 rounds becaus of my light loads. Also after a string of lead loads that foul the barrell fir one or two jacketed slugs as these will remove most of the fouling.

I've recently tried 7.5gr of IMR 4756 behind 245gr Frontier -- felt like .22LR! I used a magnum case but set a bullet to match OAL of .44spl laod. ;)

I am using 9 grains of unique powder with a 240 semi wade cutter lead and it not to bad the wife has fired it several times now and does not seem to mind it

trail boss is great...

Has anyone used Trail Boss under a 240 gr SWC? What was your load? It is suppose to be very bulky.

My first load for my new to me S+W 29 - 2 with a 6" barrel
was 6.0 gr trail boss. Using 240 gr RNFP lead bullets.
No you cannot double charge.

I got a 1 1/2" group from sand bags at 25 yards.:D
Best shooting ever for me.
Pleasant to shoot. You could shoot 100, no problem.
Way more fun that say a factory 357 shot from a full size revolver.

Backed the charge down to 5.8 grains then 5.6 grains.
Accuracy seemed to drop off.

Tried 18.8 grains of A 2400 with the same bullets.
Not for beginners but accurate too.

Trail boss is working real good in my 45 70 too.
No you cannot double charge.

I've used 8 grains of Titegroup with a 245 grains Frontier. This won't fill much of the case, but Titegroup is known to be 'position insensitive'.

It was pitifully underpowered, but the bullet reached its target and some people liked it.

Now tell me about 32 grains of H110 with a 180 grains. :D
