Im sure someone here knows something about these rifles, but I have been looking around and I would like to know if there are any major differences between the m-14 and ruger mini-14. Any advise on which is better, where i can buy one? I would rather a platform in the 308 then 223 and a pict.rail for a scope. If anyone has owned or shot one please help, which way do i go? Thanks :)

You just answered your own question. I dont think the ruger comes in 7.62x51...
M14 it is. wohooo

Any major differences?
Well, there are quite a number of rather substantial ones. There are some similarities, but think of them as different rifles.
If you want a .308, then a commercial version of the M-14 is the only one in the caliber.
A Picatinny rail for scope mounting? There are scope mounting systems for both rifles.

The ruger is smaller and cleaner, nicer finish, much cheaper to feed.
The M14/305 - 308, super cool.. not the nicest finish

What's your purpose with the rifle?
That's really the question seeing as how different these rifles are from one another ;)

Ammo cost is a factor and personally I find the Norc M14 to be a piece of crap unless your willing to mod the hell outta it.

Any other M14 is costing an arm and a leg.

The mini is a real fun gun and 223 is cheap, and fit and finish is way above the Norc.

Yeah, cost is huge with these..
If you're comfortable emptying your coffers of .60+ cents every time you pull the trigger, knowing how many times your going to want to do so when you go shooting, then think about the 308.
But if you're not hunting with it, you'd save a bundle on ammo with the mini

There are norinco m14s for sell in the EE, maybe even if you offer a slightly lower then asking price, they'll sell it. Just saying

Nobody said it but i will yes the M-14 will cost more to feed but the majority of them will give you very good accuracy as far it goes for the mini-14 cant group and if they do all the money you will need to make it group, might as well buy 308 ammo and have fun... JP.

Ah, but that's a rite of passage for new M-14 owners in Canada.:D

uh oh, bought mine used, didn't have to clean it.

I own both a m14 and a mini 30 (7.62x39mm).

mini 14/30 are less complex to disassemble, with no tools other than a nail or screwdriver to pop the trigger guard up.
that being said, there is less you can really tune on them to make them shoot like a m14. also less after market parts here in Canada. Don't fall into the plastic stock sh*t like tapco.

mini's are notorious brass throwers.
my 30 throws em about 14' to the three o clock position, makes brass hard to find.

there is A LOT of animosity towards bill ruger and his rifles due to his not supporting regular capacity mags for the mini (20 rounders).
the early minis were inaccurate due to pencil barrels, and this has provided a lot of bad stories about them, no matter the generation.

minis are a great little "working" truck gun and nowhere near the weight or the length of an m14.

$ wise? the mini will cost you more, $650 (used) - $900 or so new vs. $370- $500.

Nothing to do with animosity i own 4 Rugers but the Mini is the only rifle i did sell it made me so mad could not bring it to shoot under 4 inch even the best handloads and it was a brand new 2005 Synthetic ranch rifle not to old dont you think... JP.

Makes me kind of chuckle that people will spend a grand to make an Norc m14 a shooter, and a mini 14 has to shoot MOA out of the box or it's junk. Spend a little time to figure out what your particular rifle likes for ammo and the mini is a decent shooting gun. Mine 580 series will shoot 1.5 to 2" groups @ 100 yards all day long. My old 181 series would shoot around 2". Not tack drivers, but more than acceptable for punching paper and hunting. They will string a bit if your running off a lot of rounds in rapid succession, but if your doing that you won't care about groups either. Just my .02.

Yep, the average M14 is a pretty good shooter. Nope, the new Mini 14's do in fact group quite well. Mine will do 1.5-2.5" all day long - with no mods.

anyone know where i could get parts for the m14? especially a new stock. Sorry to all the traditionalists but i like the look of the synthetic stock. Not to mention i noticed that you cant mount scopes or reflex sights that close with out some sort of add on rail that i see some have. where would i get that at? any good dealers on here for those and stocks?
