affordable .223 rifle range + varmint

I'm looking for an affordable rifle option in .223 for both having fun at the range and for varmint hunting. I'm interested in the Mossberg Predator 18'' barrel but it seems impossible to comeby in Canada and the magazine may have reliability issues according to some!?

Also the Zastava rifles seem to be great quality at affordable prices but finding one in .223 seems impossible as well.

Thoughts?
 
Buy a Howa, or a Vanguard 2 if you want a rifle that is inexpensive and still quality built. You will not be disappointed, and Mossberg is not generally a great quilt option (of course there are some lucky exceptions )
 
i recently picked up a remington 783 in .223. My first venture into the affordable rifle. Based on my experience I would recommend one. I've shot about 300 rounds and so far I have to say it shoots well. I have 2 loads that will put 5 shots into .5 moa at 100yrds consistently. The trigger is way above what I was expecting and in my opinion has the best system for adjusting pull weight on any trigger I have. The scope and rings are not good and I ended up switching them out. I had to open up on the channel on the stock to float the barrel, but that's fine with me considering I paid under $400 for the rifle and I've had to do the same thing with rifles I've paid over $1500 for. The barrel is not a varmint contour, but is a little heavier than a sporter, nice compromise in my mind. Action is smooth. Jerry at Mystic precision has a write up on a 783 he customized and has many good things to say about the 783 in the article. Maybe not a gun you were looking at, but might be worth considering.
 
I'm starting to think seriously about the Savage Hog Hunter .223. It matches the features and controls of my .308 Sako Black Bear closely which could be fun for hunting and practice seasons.
 
I've had good luck with my Mossberg Varmint. It accepts the LAR-10 mag's and I've had no feeding options from a quality mag.
