Just curious as to my options for an affordable .223. Prefer a wood stock, but a good shooter is ultimately more important. Looking at around 5-600, new or used. Not interested in savage axis. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

I'll second that,
imo the XS7 is the best entry level price point rifle out there
If a detachable mag isn't a deal breaker you get everything else in a real short action for a great price.
There is also the Stevens 200 that is right there as well.
shoulder them both and go from there...

Savage Axis. Those are fairly cheap!

LOL..... Anyways, I have a Remington 799, it's a minimauser action made by Zastava and refined by Rem and dropped into a fairly attractive Boyd's laminate. You can usually find these for 5-600 bucks....

Norinco JW105 for.223 or 5.56 for consideration.

You can purchase a wood stock from Boyds if synthetic is not acceptable.

+1 here. Especially given Boyds' new $500 limit

+1 again. Based off of Savages 10/110 series I believe IIRC. Heard they were/have been discontinued to make way for the new B-Mag (??). Used or the EE here would be your best bets at finding one.

Have owned a Vanguard s1 and for the price you get just about everything a guy could want in a working gun. I now own a savage model 25 varmint with thumbhole stock and that thing is the most accurate rifle under 700 I have ever shot. Reliable too. Basically any savage will fill your requirements.

I know you said no axis but you could get one cheap and then spend another 200 on a trigger and a nice stock and have an excellent rifle and still be under budget. I am thinking about doing that for a coyote gun. Stainless axis in 22-250 about 350 bucks. Boyds lightweight thumbhole laminate in pepper 100 bucks. Drop in trigger from rifle basix another 100 that's about everything I want for under 600 since the axis is inherently very accurate and all you need to do it pretty it up how you so chose.

Sorry to get off topic but Mmmm.

What purpose does this gun serve?

If you want a range toy spend a few more bucks and pick up a Remington SPS Tactical. The heavy barrel is much better for range use, as it takes longer to heat up, cools faster, and recoil will be non existent.

If it's just for coyotes, or the field, then I would go with the Weatherby as well. Hard to beat for the money with a great action, and a pretty nice stock. Only problem I have with it is the rubber inserts in the stock, and how long they will last, but that is unknown as it is brand new.

Does Marlin make these rifles in 223?

They do, but the problem you might have is actually finding one. I have a XL7 in 30-06, its a great shooter so I wanted to pick up a .243 I could use for coyote and my daughter deer, but after calling every where and not finding one a gunnut here directed me to a great place, but unfortunately the stock and barrel was all scratched up so I passed since I am anal on having no scratches lol have yet to find another place selling them.

definitely a weatherby vanguard, bet rifle in 223 out there in my eyes. probably arnt going to belive me but I shot a coyote at 463 yards a couple days ago with it!
