I'll toss in the Ruger American into the equation...

Yup Best grouping riffle out of the box for 399$

Personally, if I was just starting out I'd go for the new stainless Savage package rifle in .308 Win or .30-06 Springfield with the econo Weaver scope.

At one time (may be dating myself) when you said "inexpensive hunting rifle" you were talking about a surplus enfield .303 British. And you could go down to the local hardware store and get one for a song.

Many Many a first time hunter shot their first deer or moose with one.

Still an option and though not a great choice, a fun choice that would make one part of an old Canadian tradition.

Anyway, a used rifle can be a great deal. There are gun shows and gun auctions and the gun exchange forum on this site where you can often get a good rifle for a good price.

I'll cast my vote for used. Old rifles with good bores are always better quality for the dollar. All wood and steel, no plastic, and they always feel better and usually shoot well. No one ever listens though...

Surprisingly enough a lot of buyers do listen.
The older rifles on our gun show table always seem to sell before the new ones and I prefer to buy older ones.
As a matter of fact I have been selling my new stuff and keeping / hoarding the old timers.
Aside from being made with better workmanship most shoot every bit as well as the new guns, just my findings....

I'll put in my vote for a rem798... These are hidden gems... The extraction is damn perfect... The bolt travel is a bit rough but grab a pint and sit on your deck and just cycle it for a while and smooth as butter...

You know the thing about a used rifle is it has a history. What that history is we may never know.

Once I was sheep hunting and up high in the rocks I found a spent .300 savage case. I picked it up and wondered if it had killed a ram. Years later I bought a used Savage 99 in .300 savage. What critters had it killed? Had it ever been sheep hunting? had it possibly fired the cartridge that I found up high in the mountains????

A rifle you are going to replace before next hunting season? An old sporter Enfield from the EE. That will leave about $300 of your $4-500 budget in the savings account for the new rifle.
