Affordable Side by Side for Goose Hunting

So would it be adviseable to grab the one I posted and have the choke removed when I have the money then? Sorry if I'm coming off as a tad dim but I'm having a tough time soaking up all this knowledge!

All the cheapest Sauer SxS seem to be full! Also, how bad is having a chipped toe? Is it worth the extra 20$ to buy one without a chipped toe?

Thanks for your patience guys

Bahahaha

Sorry to be more specific, what does a chipped toe represent? Faulty amnufacturing? Mistreating by a previous owner? Is it the kind of thing that hinders the gun's functioning or is it purely aesthetic?

If it really is just the chipped tooth affecting her looks and she's still great then I don't see why one should forego!

A chipped toe will not affect function, unless maybe it catches in your clothing when putting the gun to your shoulder. Many older guns will have chipped toes. Comes from use. I have bought a few vintage guns with chipped toes but I had them repaired. So, if I was buying, I would pay the extra $20.00 to have one with no chip just because I'm kind of fussy. If it was a $100.00 difference, then I might go for the chipped toe. But again, just my opinion.

Though mind you, the one that is $20 more is described as having "Stock cracked around wrist. chipped buttplate"

Decisions decisions!

I guess I'll just go for the cheaper one then and maybe smooth it down!

In regards to buying the gun you posted about. I would not buy any of the Sauers you listed as all have "various" stock repairs. Yes, they are only around $175.00 but for a little more you can do better and get a gun with no cracks. I would be patient and watch the EE. In the mean time, save a few pennies. You will come across a pretty decent FEG or Sauer for $300.00 to $400.00 that doesn't have cracks or a loose stock. I bought a Sauer of the EE a month ago that looks pretty much like new. It saw little use. It is a fancier grade than those on tradeex having pheasants engraved on one side and geese on the other. I paid $450.00 shipped.
One thing to note. On European guns, chokes are often "tighter" than north american guns. So a European gun that has an improved modified choke will likely be too tight for steel and also will require opening up.

Oh damn! Just bought it.

Though thankfully there are people in my family willing to fix the stock and with experience doing it. So hopefully it won't be too much of an issue. Guess I shoulda waited a bit longer though before hitting the button...

Not sure why a side by side. Pump or semi-auto allow you to load three shots instead of two. In field hunting where birds can come at you in large numbers, it makes more sense. I use a Browning BPS pump action camp. It sustains rain well, shoots well, takes 3"½ shells and used shells fall at your feet rather than be thrown in your buddy's face. Plus, on the used market, pumps are cheaper.

It all depends on what a person wants. One man's taste certainly isn't anothers'. Plus, there are those who could care less if a gun only holds 2 shells.

OP, I sent you a pm about a sub 300 excellent condition used Baikal. You'll ideally want a mod/ic combo. Hard to come by in older guns where full/mod is the norm. get the full reamed to ic for a ic/mod

oh wait, you bought one...nvrmind. No worries. You're not gonna lose much if you find you don't like it and it ends up in the EE.

Gunsaholic: You got it!

Safehunter: Rotten timing!

And yeah, I figure if it doesn't work out, it'll still look nice on a wall! Thanks anyway though!

The good thing about TradeEx is they have an amazing return policy. The have a 30 days no questions asked 100% money back guarantee (except for shipping) as long as you don't modify or fire it.

Which one did you end up buying?

I kept that in mind when I ordered!

I picked up the Sauer & Sohn since I hear they're sturdy little critters and it was dirt cheap, sturdy is good! I also figured that since I don't think the barrels are chromed and I'm a very casual shooter, the conversion would be quite a bit cheaper.

...at least if it turns out to be crap as I've said, it'll at least look good on the wall

Well, at that price you can buy two, even with a limited budget! I think one of those Tradeex doubles will eventually find it's way into my cabinet, but a Steyr 95/34 just decided to hop in the mail and make it's way over to my place. Damn dealers and their unreasonably cheap prices.....

Hope the Sauer works out for you Chivirac!

A few days ago I ordered a Spanish sxs 12ga, 2 3/4" with mod/mod barrels from Tradex, as a bit of a project to keep me entertained on cold winter nights. Hopefully it will be here in about a week. It has a small tang crack, which should be an easy fix. I'll clean up the checkering, refinish the wood in tung oil, detail polish the receiver, and touch up the blue on the barrel. It might be a fairly versatile piece, with steel shot for waterfowl, and lead for upland. Regardless, I should be able to get my $200 back just in the satisfaction to be had from tidying it up.
