Be aware than not all skateboard tape is created equal, and most of it is probably far too rough to have it rubbing against bare skin for any length of time. I'd try to find one of the more rubberized varieties.

Correct it’s not all the same, I worked in a skate/snowboard shop for years and you generally have a fine and a coarse grip tape to pick from. The fine is what you want and will not shred your hands to bits, they usually sell it buy the foot and if your lucky they might have a scrap end of the roll piece they’ll give you for nothing if you ask.
