Hey Bigugly, that would be me alright.:)

Where are you going and what are you hunting?/ do you hunt predators?

Redfrog

You were at the opposite side of the hall from us at Swift Current last month. The Old Man and Doug were there peddling their wares. As soon as we got home Dad started designing a "Predator Knife" along the lines of what you were talking about.

I'm going with the Old Man and Doug in June 07 to RSA. Planning for Kudu, Gemsbok, Impala, Springbok, Wildebeest and Zebra.

I was wishing I'd bought a Foxpro from you at the show. No predators up here in Inuvik, but there's no shortage of 'yotes at the Old Man's place. And the weather was just right for hunting while I was there.

Redfrog what an intertaining read, and great photos. I was wondering about the attire(seems like a lot of clothing)is it not hot there?

Also I know it is an odd question, but could you tell us how young you are?

I ask because I'm 61 and am wondering(good health and all)seems like you made great sport of it! I too would like to try and schedule something like this into my life experience!

You're a fine looking Gentleman with a SUPER sense of humour, and say kuddios for those that still use the .270.

Bob

Big Ugly Man. I'd sure like to see that knife when it's done. Don't feel bad about not buying the Foxpro at the show, I have lots more:D :D

BobbyJack, My partner on the trip is from Tulsa.:D
The weather was great. It is the beginning of winter there. The locals wore parkas for calling at night though. I'm wearing a very lightweight jacket. It may appears as more because there is lots of me under it.;) I spoke with one of our PH's yesterday. He said that they had a front come through after we left and it dumped 2 feet of snow on the plateau that I shot the Eland on.

I'm 62., have three kids, all moved out:D :D :D and a child bride, that has put up with me for 25 years, I think.:p I guide for hunting and fly in fishing, and have managed to parlay my love of hunting and outdoors into a job. I love it. I'm either hunting, or fishing, or talking and writing about it. I'll quit when I die.:D I'll have time to rest then.:)

If you have interest in going to Africa, Do it!! it is a great experience.

I didn't get anything scored. I picked animals that I thought were trphies to me. It was kind of a personal thing. I do score deer that I kill in Canada, but to be honest I was as thrilled calling a jackal in during the day as shooting any of the other animals. It was an awesome hunt and experience, so they were all "Book" animals to me:D

That is a fantastic outlook Redfrog! I commend you! :)

I am extremely interested in Africa. My dream hunt is to Zimbabwe or Tanzania for Cape Buffalo. If I didn't have a few debts to take care of I'd book a hunt tomorrow!!

I've actually been pricing out hunts lately. I am seriously looking at an 18 day hunt for Cape Buffalo & Leopard, with incidental plains game... Sable maybe... Kudu... Like I'm talking about $16,000 just for the hunt and then airfare trophy fees and all that other $$$ on top. But I don't care about the $$$ and we only live once!!

But it looks like a couple of years before I get to go... :(

Thanks Demonical:D

Cape buffalo and Leopard would be a great hunt. None of that stuff is cheap, but you are right, you only live once and the hearse doesn't have a luggage rack to you can take your money with you.:p

I was from Ellisras in the north to the cape on the east side.:D

I think a babies first solid food in south africa is Biltong!!!!;)

Blindside, when I got home "Yes Dear" asked if I 'd shot anything.  I said I shot a couple antelope.

She pressed the issue and asked to see pics. She said they were beautiful, then went on to question my sanity. The conversation went like this.
"What are you gonna do with them???"
"Well duh! get them mounted"
" I know that dumbass, where are you going to put them?"
"Well I guess we'll just have to buy a bigger house now , won't we??"
"Yeah right!!!"

We're taking possession Aug 4 :D :D :D 160 acres on the ragged edge of nowhere. :D But hey Ill have room for our horses and my African mounts. I may even need a few more to fill the place up.;) ;)

May have room for a couple Jack Russels from RSA as well.

"I may even need a few more to fill the place up"... Which was behind the whole safari in the first place, right? (Go on safari, bring back mounts... oops, not enough room... need bigger place.... now need to do another safari to fill all the empty space....)

Very crafty. But I guess your other half must be used to these diabolical ruses after so many years together.

Now thats man talk. The african stuff will make a big area look small in a hurry. Those far ceiling peaks are 14'

Is the wall that the Kudu and eland are on 14 feet???

Josquin, she really was excited that I could get to Africa. She doesn't shoot or hunt and has a house full of misfit animals, but she realizes that if I couldn't hunt, I might as well be dead. It is all part of the package of who I am. There is not much in my life that is not connected to the outdoors.:D

I'm in awe here! Wow, you guys are amazing. ( have to say you guys now, cause Blindside has some aweome stuff)

Redfrog.. the Biltong is beautiful! A ton of meat there for sure.

I'm a cook and very curious... what does the meat taste like? I would presume it would be cooked like any other meat?

I have to say , your wife is one lucky woman! Wow, to buy a home to fit your game meat, with hunting land to boot! I'm jealous! ;)

Great posts, thankyou!

Blindside, is that here in the Great white north, That room has an African sense about it with those windows, and is that stone work i see out the door?/

Momma Bear, the jerky that is made from the kudu, or any other venison is called Biltong. It is not as salty or hot/spicy as some we have. It is sold absolutely everywhere. And everyone eats it.

We ate game at least one meal a day and sometimes more. Everything from some kind of venison sausages in the morning to ostrich in a wine sauce at night. We ate kidney wrapped in who knows what for hors d'ouvres in the lounge at the lodge before dinner. And pumpkin soup for brunch and pumpkin muffins and guava or passionfriut with yogurt for breakfast. We ate kude and eland and springbok and impala and blesbuck. Game is eaten there as we eat beef and pork here. Actually I never had any pork there now that I think about it, and only had beef steak once. I had the steak in an American style chain restaurant in J'Burg.

I agree that my wife is a lucky woman. She doesn't cook or hunt. She has no interest in hunting and while she can be a very good cook, she doesn't enjoy it. I on the other hand really like to cook, so I do all the cooking.
She loves this area is really excited about the move, as she/we have 6 horses and 5 dogs. She also has a pet pig. Buster Jiggs. I gave him to her about 8 years ago for her birthday.

A Pig's Tale....by Redfrog

While we were living in B.C. I was busy with my landscaping business. My wife's birthday is a few days before Christmas. I came home late from work, tired and wet of course. As I drove in my drive I remembered her birthday.

I did what I always do in a life threatening situation, I broke out in a sweat and asked God to help me. God said phone Ted, he'll have a little weaner pig.
Give him $40 bucks and she'll never forget this birthday or this precious gift.
I thanked God and phoned Ted.

After the usual small talk, I asked if he had any little pigs. "Of course i do I'm a pig rancher." He asked if I was gonna BBQ in the middle of winter. I said no it's a birthday present for "Yes Dear" The silence was deafening.

He asked if I had any idea how long pigs lived." No of course not do you"
He said "Not very long around here, I'm a pig rancher y'know." He said "You know that pig will be around your place till he dies of old age?" I said "Ted I forgot her birthday" Ted said "You better hurry over and get this pig, buddy:eek:  "

I got the pig, put him in a stall in the barn and clued the kids. I brought my child bride to the barn to show her what a good job the kids had done cleaning the barn for her birthday. Well the rest is history as they say.
Buster Jiggs turned 7 last November.

He is about 700 pounds and as gentle as a lamb. We have had hours of fun from that pig and "Yes Dear" tells everyone that is the best birthday present she ever got.:D
