My partner, Yotenight hunter and I had the misfort...er I mean good fortune to hunt with two predator hunters from South Africa, Lochi and Gerhard. We made arrangements to hook up with these guys after our "big game"hunt. Gerhard picked us up at the airport and we spent the first few days with him.
. "We had a great time" would be gross understatement. These two guys went way out of their way to make sure we never came back again
without bring our friends.
Within a short time with Gerhard I felt like I had known him for years. We were made to feel more than welcome and he made sure we had a great hunt with good friends.
We spent the first day shooting at doves travelling from the sunflowers to the water hole. It was the most relaxing. enjoyable day of the three weeks for me.
The landowner welcomed us into his home for lunch and Gerhard showed off by grilling some sausages South African style.
The only pic that turned out of Gerhard is a postcard type beside a huge palm. I tok it to show my wife the palm and with Gerhard in it , it isn't suitable for this board.
I think YNH may have some pics.
We spent a couple days with Gerhard during which he insulted us and burnt our food, made loud noises on stand, slammed the truck door and drank non stop. He explained he was conditioning us for the time we would spend with Lochi.
I'm kidding of course. I can't say enough about the effort these two put out to make our visit enjoyable. They both have great senses of humor and are just plain fun to hang out with.
Here's a pic of master chef Lochi. As a world class chef........ he is a great engineer.
He is what I would call a very religious cook... everything is a bloody sacrifice or a burnt offering.
Seriously he and his side kick cooked for us and grilled chicken and poured the Castle and red wine non stop. My kind of guys If there is a better way to enjoy friends than sitting around the brae in the lapa, drinking a cool beverage and telling lies, I sure haven't found it yet.
Not only is Lochi an engineer, PH, chef, and wine expert, he is also a fine mechanic. In SA fuel is at a premium. Unfortunately the quality is sometimes poor and additives are required from time to time. Lochi has a special formula he has developed for Gerhard's bakkie[pickup]. You can see him here adding the first ingredient the gallon of vinegar that goes in next is in the pickup box.
Here's a daytime jackal that was too crafty to come to the call. He's sleeping beside my Blesbuck
Here's YNH and Lochi with a jackal they found dead. It looked like he had a collision with a piece of flying lead. Strange
Here's yours truly with a jackal that I shot at 470 yds at night....would you believe 370yds, Alright it was 70 yds, but it seemed lot further.
Remember Jackal cannot be called during daylight hours in Africa. The only reason I managed to get any of these in the daytime is because my FX3 is on Alberta time and there is 9 hours difference, they thought the sound was a night time sound. BTW over thousands of generations, the jackal has developed special skills for night hunting. They can hear in the dark. Unfortuately they didn't know the jackrabbit in distress was backed up by a frog with a firearm.
