African game rifles in Canada?

It's got my mouth watering. You all are going to hate me but I plan on using it black bear hunting and at least once on a white tail. I figure if I hit the neck or ribs I should be in an acceptable amount of meat loss.

realistically, would it do more meat damage than a 12 gauge slug?

Using a .416 on WT's and BB's it matters less what bullet you shoot and more how you load it... anything from the .416 is going to kill deer and black bears, the question is do you want to shred it...

I load the .405 Win with 300 SP's at 2200... 3000 ft/lb is plenty for anything local.

I think you'll find that the big slow tough bullets that are ticket on the big nasties will do less meat damage than smaller higher velocity rounds.

On the other hand; if you're just taking up the slack in your trigger after your bear comes in and some idiot parks a battleship in between.....................you're still in the game.

Is there anywhere in Canada I can find a .416 rigby bolt action rifle? Cant seem to find anyone who has any in stock that is under $2k There was a Ruger RSM and a CZ 550 available for a while that was in my price range... or so i thought.

Couple of heavy hitters on the Ellwood Epps website including a Weatherby bolt in 416 Weatherby Magnum which is like a 416 Rigby on steroids.
And a Holland & Holland bolt in 416 Rigby for only $44,950.00.

Funny to see this thread come up. I just bougt a commerical mauser m98 magnum action today and am in contact with Jerry pricing a prefit shilen barrel in either 416 rigby, 458 lott or 460 weatherby mag. To build one if these heavy hitters.

Im thinking if im going this big and its only for sh*ts and giggles anyway i mite as well go 460 weatherby.

I just couldn't imagine taking a 45K rifle out hunting in the rain Or dragging it through a swamp or humping it up a slope where you're grabbing what ever you can to continue upward movement.

OP, just do it. Good for some serious grins out at the cabin. Haven’t hunted with it yet as my first stout medium is a .375 H&H in a B.C. stock that gets dragged thru the crap.

Gonna put a Leupold German #3 on it for this fall and make an attempt to seriously hunt with it this year..... Best of luck on your quest!

Yup, we all say that but a new vehicle can cost that much and we wouldn't think twice about dragging it throught muck, snow and salt not to mention leaving it in a parking lot at the mercy of half blind old folk.

Yeah a 404 jeffery would be a really cool round. But i have this arbitrary number of atleast 5000 ft-lb of force that i want out of the rifle and to burn more then 100gr of smokeless. The 416 rigby was my top choice but then i started thinging if im this big why not go the biggest i can. Shilen prefit prechambered barrels only come in a few bigbore rounds and 460 weatherby is the biggest.

I donno im a weird person lol.

I think I would pass on shooting a 460WBY. You must have some big deer in NS.

I’d go with the .404 Jeffrey in a heartbeat.

In my limited (20 critters +-) experience, the .404 Jeffrey is also easy to “shoot well”. It’s a polite cartridge that is versatile (Genet to elephant) and beautifully lethal on the receiving end. Bullet construction and shot placement is key, as always. But, if you can shoot it well, you’re in good shape to put the bullet where it’s supposed to go. (Yes, this is a huge endorsement of the Heym Express Rifle!)

Regarding the baboons, yeah, the opposible thumb is sobering.

Why not a 500 Jeffery or a 505 Gibbs?
