Hi Guys and Gals,

Does anyone know what a guided African hunt starts at, cost wise?

I never thought I'd be asking this question, and I'm pretty sure it'll be far from my budget, but hey..it never hurts to ask right?

Any info is appreciated.
Thanks!!

:)

Check out www . accuratereloading . com

They kind of specialize in African hunts. I went a few years ago with www . huntersgame . co . za

Just run those all together.

I've done lots of reading on this in the last few months, and I would count on at least $10K to do anything in Africa.

The price of the hunt is only one part, you still need to get there and back. If you plan on keeping any mounts, or even just antlers, you need to pay taxidermy fees and shipping, which can be as much or more than the hunt itself.

What do you want to hunt and where do you want to hunt it? Want to keep any taxidermy? Going to use Air Miles or other points to fly or pay cash for tickets?

Some countries, Tanzania for example, are more expensive than others due to higher concession and trophy fees mandated by the government. South Africa can be remarkably inexpensive but you have to do your due dilligence - the running joke for years has been that anyone with 2 acres of land and a steenbok on it can call himself a PH in RSA. Some ranches can be huge - 100,000 acres but most are much smaller - say 10,000 - 20,000. Not tiny, but you're on fenced land hunting animals that, for the most part, are bought at auction and put out on the land. You can still have a rewarding hunt, but it will never come close to the experience of "real" africa where the fences keep the animals out not vice versa.

My first trip was to RSA in 2007. Total airfare was $3000, trophy fees and day rates about $9500, taxidermy about $3500 and shipping about $1500 (I'm not near my filing cabinet so I can't say for sure). My trip this summer to Zim is looking about $16,667 for daily rates, trophy fees, air charter and sundries plus dip, ship and taxidermy (I haven't received those bills yet). Add on about $500 in taxes for airline tickets booked on points and I'll be lucky to get out of it under $22K. That said, you don't pay for a safari in one chunk. I paid my deposit in January 2009, bought my tickets in October 2009, paid the balance of the day rates and fees in April 2010 and will likely receive my final invoice in the next month or so. Dip and ship a little later and taxidermy likely in 6 months. So spread the payments out over 24-30 months and suddenly the cost is easier to absorb. Save for a hunt like that over 5 years and nearly anyone can do it.

BUM makes a good point

When my son and I went in 2007 Air fare for two was $7900 paid in the fall of 2006 along with $2500 deposit, paid the balance of our actual hunt of about $9000 in the summer of 2007 when there and a deposit of 50% on taxidermy$1500, then in 2008 the balance of the taxidermy and another $1800 for shipping. Add on some souvenir's and a pair of very nice diamond earings for my wife another $3,000. I paid for mine hunt over 3 years, total cost was about $27,000 US.

You can have a great hunt in Africa for about 5-7K you can also spend upwards of 150K
One thing I suggest you do is start researching and deciding what you are interested in getting. Usually you will pay daily fees and trophy fees based on per animal.
I would suggest finding when your next Safari Club International dinner is they usually have some great deals or talk with an experienced booking agent. If you PM me I will give you a contact that is the very best.

I am going next year with Hunt Africa Safaris [Wolverine Sports] a 10 day hunt is $7775.00 US for 6 animals taxidermy and handling fees are extra. They have a trophy fee list on their website that is about the same for all companies in South Africa. My flights are booked using aeroplan, but I think would have cost $16000.00 for business class. I spent 2 years on research so check around.

Take the price of a plainsgame package and multiply that by 1.5 for the extra trophies that you will take. Add $5000 for airfare, tips and incidentals. Taxidermy and freight vary but you can start talking at about $5000 on the low end.
Even with our near par dollar you will end up spending 90 cent dollars once you get bent over on exchange rates.

By this formula, a $7000 plainsgame can easily end up around $22,500 by the time the fat lady sings, and we can all go home.

Then there's the diamonds for the little lady, so you can do it all over again next year, ;)

check out huntafrica.ca. John at Wolverine works closely with them. I did a trip with them in 08, it was fantastic and a trip of a lifetime. I can't wait to have enough cash to do it again...
