African Rifle: Lefty going in next few years

Daniel Sell (a fantastic big bore gunsmith out of Montreal) is building me a custom H&H based on a left-hand Granite Mountain action. He's building two actually, one for me and one for a good friend of mine.

The actions should be arriving in about three months. The wood has already arrived. Some nice AAA Fancy French Walnut.

Those look real sweet. And it shows the LH Standard Magnum is the action for the 375 H&H. Did they give you price ranges regarding wood quality, scope mounts etc?

Would love to hear more about this gun!

Bronco Boy and Paul S... the two Granite's Daniel is building will be fully detailed (with both photographs and written description) here on CGN. Daniel has become a very good friend of mine and it's the least I can do.

As far as pricing, the Granite action retails for about $3000USD, which will be more like $3500CAD once they arrive due to permit fees, shipping etc... It is considered by many to be the BEST Mauser reproduction on the market. Wait time is minimum 6 months from the factory if you can get on their waiting list. The fact that is is one of the few actions available in left hand made it a natural choice for us.

The wood... well... the wood we have is nothing short of fantastic. We chose AAA Fancy walnut (mine is French, my buddy's is Claro) since we didn't think spending 3x the price on Exhibition grade was a wise choice, as these guns will see lots of use here in North America as well as Africa (hopefully). That being said... the AAA Fancy is spectacular nonetheless. Daniel has a quite a few blanks in inventory and should have more by the time we are ready to build.

We are still undecided as to what barrels we will be going with... but Krieger, Heym and Shilen are on the short list. We are still researching...

That being said, no cost is being spared with this rifle... within reason. Just the base cost on the action, wood and barrel is going to be around the 5k mark. Add to that all the metal prep and finishing work (action and barrel), the actual stock carving, checkering and finishing, and the custom features.... the price will certainly be up there, but very do-able for a rifle of this quality. Daniel has estimated that it was take between two and three months to build each rifle. His attention to detail and perfection are beyond reproach.

Thanks for all the info! I am very much looking forward to seeing the finished product.

And I thought I have expensive taste in guns

Well the build cost of these two particular guns is mostly in the wood and action...

I would estimate that Daniel can build up a nice CZ550 Magnum action w/ a premium barrel (and very nice wood) for around the $5k mark. Since he is just starting out here in Canada his pricing is VERY competitive. For a gunsmith with over 25 years experience, having worked in the custom shops at Weatherby and Ithaca, and having had dealings with Rigby, Purdey and Churchill... he is by far one of the most competent gunsmiths I have ever met. He is even designing and prototyping a proprietary falling block double rifle!!

Regarding the actual optic mounts... we were originally going with EAW claw mounts, but the are really expensive to fit... we may just end up going with something a little more cost effective..

Nice!

I have always wanted to do a build on a GMA.
The actions are stunning.
I don't think the barrel matters as long as it is a good one. I would probably go with a cut rifle out of tradition, but that is just me.

Could you please post or PM me Daniels contact information?

OK gentlemen, have any of you ever thought of a semi-auto .458 Win Mag?

I don't know what to say........

Say "Oh my JESUS I have to have it!!!"

WOW what a build that is!!!

I've just looked at everything on their site. Impressive stuff. That same Garand in 338 Win Mag is available. Both the .458 and .338 cost $3500ea. They have some M14/M1A scope mounts that some of our dealers here should consider selling.

A 5 shot 458 Mag semi-auto. Dirty Harry would have used this one instead of the Model 70 he used in the movie!

The only issues I have with the big 458s is poor ballistics and the additional muscle effort required to control the rifle.
If the animal of a lifetime pops out at 300 yards you are certainly facing a challenging shot.

I think the 40s are a better compromise, and the 375s might be the smartest choice but hey....Sometimes a guy has to do that other thing !:D

But dangerous game hunting, which is the primary purpose of these rifles, is close range stuff. So you get closer, or practice some long range shooting, just to learn the trjectory.

Also, there's lots of spitzer bullets available that might carry a bit better long range then you think. Swift A Frame, any of the Barnes TSX, the Nosler Partitions. I bet they'd work not too bad out to 300 yards.

But me personally, I wouldn't want to shoot a Cape Buffalo at 300 yards anyway. I want to see the 'reds' of his eyes...
