Well I have to start off by thanking everyone for all of your information and suggestions. A big shout out to Tomochan for allowing me to pester him and ask questions at the range.

Now I have to start to decide which glass, bi-pod, muzzle brake and other accessories to mount on to the new toy.

So far its looking like a Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50, either a Harris or Atlas Bi-pod, and a NEA or Dlask muzzle brake.

Well here she is, Remington 700 SS 5R Mil-Spec 10th Anniversary Edition. I know they are all over the board but this one is special,,,, its mine!!

Nice rig. I'd go with a better scope for the same price as the pst. I have a pst and have come to the conclusion that it's just another Philippine-made, tacti-cool scope. There is nothing impressive about it, great marketing effort and warranty. I would suggest the Sightron s3 6-24x50 lrmoa, I don't think there is a better scope on the market for under $1000. There are many competitive shooters using the Sightron line, never heard of any using Vortex. Good luck with your build, you're off to a good start with the 5r.
 
Nice new toy mate - looking forward to seeing in on the weekend ! I would pass on the Vortex and would consider (if you want to stay 'reasonable' budget ) the Sightron Siii 8-32x56 LRMOA. I will have that scope on something this weekend and you can compare it to my NF NXS -- I am not saying it is as good as the NF ( it ain't ) but at half the price of the NF it is really a very good scope and superior IMO to the Vortex you are thinking of.

Well done on the R5 - they are nice rifles. The one I had before I went all crazy with throwing money away is still keeping its new owner happy :)

Atlas over Harris ( I have both ) unless speed of deployment is critical (lol!).

Brake - talk to me at the range.
 
Bipod: These are not as useful as they may seem. I don't bring one hunting anymore, backpacks suffice. The range has plenty of good rests or just use sandbags and save $100+


Glass: Sightron is great for the price. Most ideal uses are benchrest applications due to lack of FFP and reticle options. I sold my SIII and bought a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP MRAD. The first one was broken (2nd owner) and they replaced it for free. The VIP warantee is amazing; however, my replacment scope is ALSO BROKEN! THe problem is with the turrets; they don't track.


Definitly go with the Vortex (if you can find one) if tactical is in your interest. If not, Sightron is perfect. Or go ahead and joing the NF crew, or better yet, S&B!!


Congrats on getting into the precision game. Now prepare for more frustration and satisfaction at the range than you've ever experienced! Hope you reload!
 
I vote Sightron! I too have an SIII 6-24x50 LR and I'm more than happy with it. Very clear glass and the adjustments are perfect. When I try a new batch of hand-loads this is how I sight it in, regardless of distance: shot 1 round, steady the rifle and then use the turrets to move the crosshairs over the bullet hole. Round 2 goes right on top of round 1. Plus, it's pretty impressive being able to see .223 bullet holes on paper at 300 meters.

If you're lucky you'll find one of these around the 800$ mark.

Nice rifle! One piece of advice I can give you is that don't get sucked into getting all the mods to the rifle right away. Take baby steps so you can see how each tweak changes the accuracy of you and your rifle - trigger job, bedding, reloading, etc

As for a scope figure out what you want to do with the rifle and scope it accordingly. I don't care what guys say you don't need a Hubble on a rifle...just enough magnification to do the job. The more magnification you have the more chance you'll see issues (haze, mirage, you trembling, etc)

If you plan on going to shooting matches (and I seriously hope you do!) you can't have a brake. And really you aren't shooting a 50BMG so suck it up and learn how to manage the recoil :p

Forgot to add that once you choose a scope find a cheek bag that will line up your eye to the centerline of the scope better. Looks like you'll be doing a chin weld rather than a cheek weld with that stock
 
After a few conversations at the range today and staring/drooling over Tomochan's rifles and glass it looks like it is either going to be a Sightron Siii 8-32X56 or 10-50X60 or step up to the Nightforce NXS 8-32X56 or NXS 12-42X56. Decisions, decisions. No muzzle brake because I do want to compete with this rifle and an Atlas bi-pod. Now to start saving up my pop bottles for glass and reloading equipment.

So much depends upon intended application. For a while I used my NSX as a general duty scope for F-Class and other applications. This year I used the Sightron 10-50x60 for F-Class and thought it was a good scope - I had the FCH but I think the FCH with target dot as used by C3pppo may actually be better - but CptChaos has now acquired my Sightron so next season I will use the NF Benchrest 12-42x56 for F-Class and the NXS or S+B PMii for Tac Rifle.

If you want to play both games w/o breaking the bank a scope that may be a good compromise is the 8-32x56 Siii with the LRMOA reticle. I find 32 mag more than enough for local matches and the target dot in the middle of the reticle is very good for target shooting. 1/4 MOA clicks would be the only knock against using it for F-Class but that isn't a fatal shortcoming at all.
