I finished the polish off with some aluminum paste polish. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some carnuba wax in the polish. It holds it gloss surprisingly well.
A couple years later it's still shiny and I haven't seen any reason to clearcoat it.
I used polystripper to get the black paint off. If I remember correctly I wetsanded with 220 or 400 grit to smooth the aluminum. I used a buffing wheel to polish, and then a rub on aluminum polish to finish. If you do everything, it's a bit of work, but it all polishes well.
The aluminum paste was just some aluminum mag polish I had in the garage. I don't remember the brand. It was nothing special but it did work well. I got every piece of aluminum to be like chrome. No flaws, no haze, no swirl.
I'll say it's a bit of work! But it's also true that it polishes up nice. I also wet sanded after I stripped it using 220 then 400 grit sand paper, then I used Mothers aluminum polish (the stuff for the POWER BALL) on the end of a Dremel with a little polishing wheel that comes with them. Man that little Dremel tool is a life saver..... well finger saver anyways!!
I started with a paint stripper, then sanded with sandpaper, worked it down and then buffed it with a buffing wheel and compound. Then I applied an aluminum paste wax. Every once and a while I strip it down and polish it again just to keep it shiny.
