Maybe I'm crazy for this one, but I'm building a rifle on an M98 action and want to build it with iron sights only - no scope. Sort of a 'guide gun' style of rifle.

I'd like quick acquisition type open sights, not a peep style if I can. I've looked at Williams and I'm not sure they carry exactly what I'm looking for.

I really like the Ruger M77 Guide Gun sights:

This is basically what I am after - with the deep rear V. Does anyone know any manufacturers of this style of sight out there?

You can buy ruger sights from snapshots. They are the ruger warranty people for Canada. You can’t buy them by size , you need to find a ruger model that has the same barrel diameter and order them for that model. A real pain.

I got these trinkets at NECG. No cheap, but they are nice sights and have lots of selection. Stainless may be problematic.

I like this Ruger style with the single blade deep v express style blade (fully adjustable too I think?) and no screws on the face of the sight.

Williams does offer a shallow v blade for their WDOS rear sight.

People sometimes suggest recknagel but I can’t see anything in their online catalogue that resembles this.

Definitely following with interest

How much have you used receiver sights?

Sights like those on that Ruger do work very well but a good receiver sight set-up is a better sight. IMHO they are faster and more accurate.

Just tang sights on lever guns. I generally prefer barrel sights but I do see that Williams, for example, makes a receiver peep sight for the M98. I could buy one and try it out and see if I like it or not.

It's worth a try. I've used both and a receiver sight does work better.

You don't have to focus on the rear aperture like on a bbl sight. You just look through it and place the front sight on the target. This makes it faster and the longer sight radius makes it more accurate.

Please excuse my sideways pics, I'm not sure how to rotate them once uploaded... If you're open to receiver sights, Skinner makes some pretty nice ones. My rear sight is a Skinner for the CZ527. The front sight is a Skinner guide gun blade (partridge style) sitting in a William's 2 screw base. I think a front sight blade like that is hard to beat for speed and accuracy. Like others say, NECG for the barrel mounted shallow V sight is the place to look. Available directly or from Brownell's.

The paint is Glow-on on the front sight and something from Amazon on the rear. With a quick charge from UV flashlight they glow well enough for a few hours. Either way, a colored frontsight is a must to me.
