Does anybody out there make aftermarket parts for the S&W M&P series?

I have a M&P9

I was thinking about an aftermarket barrel with more aggressive rifiling for when I am shooting Lead rounds, or even an extra inch to 1/2" of barrel length....

Maybe trigger parts to get rid of more of the "takeup". I did a Burris trigger job on my M&P and the trigger is now @ 2.5 to 3 lbs, but all of the takeup I can get rid of still means a farily long trigger pull, I am only able to get rid of 20 to 25% of the length of travel before I chicken out, I would like to be at about 35-50% of factory trigger take up.

And some all steel mags....... (I guess that would be too much to ask) :surprised:

The list could be endless, there are getting to be alot of M&P's kicking around, not nearly as many as there are glocks, but I would think the demand would be there for aftermarket parts by now. :evil:

That being said I am curious if I should just order some new replacemnet parts & start fiddling with them to make them "better" I know what I need to do to take up the slack in the trigger, I just don't wanna make my pistol unusable, and I do not have the tools or the expertise to make a barrel, thats for sure.... I'm sure I could install one tho! lol:D

If you've seen a listing some where sound off, or even better a web site, even if its in the states, I don't care....... How will I know what to ask for if I don't know it exhists?

What are you using your M&P for?

Looks like you may be fixing things that don't need to be fixed. It is not a target pistol. It is a service pistol.

I shoot my gun almost stock and have no real issues with it. My trigger is 5.5lbs. I don't want it much lighter since 5lbs min. is the limit for IPSC production. When I shoot IDPA the trigger is perfect. I shoot lead in mine and have no issues with accuracy or cleaning.

I changed my front sight to fiber optic and blacked out the dots on the rear. Much faster sight picture.

I am currently experimenting with grip tape to improve my hold on the gun. I may end up ordering a 'sharkskin' backstrap or going to the old standby - bike tube.

All steel mags would be good if you shoot indoors a lot. Early M&P mags had a problem with cracking/beaking on the plastic lowers but they have since been beefed up and I have had zero issues with mine.

If you really what to do a lot of mods you may want to consider a 1911 platform, or a Glock if you prefer plastic, as they have loads of aftermarket stuff available.

Well I guess thats the question isn't it. I don't know what I want to use it for. I realize I am fooling around with a proven and reliable paltform...... but that is kinda the point, isn't it?

The Glock and the Colt 1911 are both good platforms bone stock.... but they can be made better with a little work and a few parts....... right?

I do like your ideas about the grips and I feel you may be correct when you say "get another platform to tinker with", but this is what I have and it will have to do untill I can "justify" spending the money on another hand gun.

Right now with my current budget I can justify about 250 -300 rnds a week (if I reload) and every once and a while I can justify the extra 1 or 2 hun for some bling, aftermarket parts or reloading eqip.

I have no plans for any kind of formal competiton, but that being said I would like to be able to show up my buddies and the boys at the club!

Right now I just use it as a paper puncher, but I am in the process of joining a 3rd club that does some tactical type shoots on Saturdays, and I am always looking for ways to improve accuracy & performance. I currently get 4 to 8" groups @ 20 yards, depending on how I shoot on any given day. Neither of the ranges I go to now have targets set up closer than 20 yards, and thus the urge to join a 3rd club. (They are more geared for pistol shooters and their targets start @ 5yrds)

I do plan on buying a 1911 style pistol and a glock 17c, (and a few others) but I kinda feel that right now its best to work with what I got.

I found some sites in the states where I can get barrels for under $100 but they are factory replacement and trigger packages for under $30 but again they are factory as well.

I was just thinking if there were parts out there it would be nice to know about them. that way I can plan and scheme to find my way to better performance...... Or save up my pennies and dimes to buy a new pistol....

You may be right I may be crazy............:D
 
I guess that is the first step...what do you want to do with your pistol.

If you want to shoot IPSC you have already reduced the trigger pull lower that the limit for Production.

You can shoot IDPA with it. Before you do any more mods to your gun take a good look at the IDPA rulebook. They are pretty restricted on the mods you are allowed depending on the division you shoot in - trigger pull is not restricted.

The only true 'aftermarket' parts I know of are fiber optic sights, adjustable sights, sharkskin backstraps and magwells.

Sights will run you $50 and up, backstrap about $40 and magwells $30+.

These are all removable so you can always go back to stock if you need to.

Slower & Heavier

I believe that there are currently no M&P aftermarket barrels on the market. Just yet that is. Since the M&P is a proprietary property of S&W, it has patent protection. An aftermarket barrel maker would have to pay a licence fee to S&W to manufacture barrels.
That said, my friend has an M&P that is pretty accurate. I think alot depends on the bullet.
I suggest that you slow the bullet down and use a heavier weight. A heavier bullet like a 130, or 135 grainer would have a longer shank and thus the lands and grooves would have more meat to bite into. Keeping the velocity around 950 to 1050 seems to work too.

there is aftermarket barrels from storm lake (Ithink) even one that will convert a .40 to fire 9mm para.
I also second go to mp-pistol.com and look around
 
S&W makes conversion kits for the .40, that make it able to fire 9mm. But you can "make one yourself" all you gotta do is buy a barrel ($139) and a mag ($41) and you are rockin. Unfortunatly you can't convert the 9mm to a .40 ( I actually think you can as they are the same grip... you just have to get the .40 slide and what not)

I tried for a long time to find adjustable sights for the M&P. Brownells sells them but can't send them to Canada.

In the long run I settled on a fiber optic front. THe M&P is accurate enough with the factory rear anyhow so I won't bother with an adjustable rear even if one becomes available.

You will love the fiber optic front. I don't know if you have tried it yet, but I blacked out the dots on the rear sight. They are useless for action shooting anyhow - I don't really see the point of them. If you have a decent sight alignment/picture everything is where it should be anyhow. Trying to line up 3 dots is just a pointless distraction.

Blacking out the rear dots will really make your FO front stand out. Very quick sight aquisition.

I suppose they would be good on nightsights where you can't see your rear sight. Then they make sense to me.

I ordered 4 mags from S&W for my 9mm. I had to do it in 2 purchases to keep it under $100.......

Then I go to my local g-store, and they had 3 in stock.... for $38.00 ea......

Talk about a PO... $41.82 x2 + exchange + $13 shipping.... twice..... and if I had looked local first I only would have had to do it once to get the mags I wanted!! :(

It pays to shop around.......

I looked on-line for mags and M&P .com was the only place that had them in stock.

Might be worth a call to WSS. They list M&P's for sale on their website so they may have spare mags. Same goes for any of our sponsors who list M&P's for sale - P&D, Canda Ammo etc.

If all else fails it is back to S&W...
