Howdy all,

I'm in process of buying my first big-game rifle, and I've tentatively narrowed it down to a new Model 70 Classic Sporter III in .30-06. The longer LOP and 24" barrel seem to fit better for a guy my size (6'5", 275lbs) than anything else I've handled in the shop and the cost is right for my budget at the moment.

My only problem is that I'd really like to have iron sights on the rifle available as a backup in the event my scope goes belly-up. Very few new North American rifles seem to be manufactured with open sights as standard, and none of those that do meet my other criteria.

So... what are my options? Are there aftermarket sights I can mount afterwards? Anything else I should be looking into?

Instead of drilling & tapping and buying sights, I would purchase a used scope for backup and use some sort of QD ring set-up. Should bem able to get some sort of scope/ring set-up for about $100, used.

I did the same when I was out west for a fly-in moose hunt a few years back, and will do the same next year. My 375H&H will have a 2x7 Leupold in weaver type rings with a 2.5x Leupold in same type of rings as a back-up
