What are some reasonably priced aftermarket stocks?? I'm considering building a Rem 700 in .308 and can't decide on a stock for it.

Should have alluminum bedding
I like the tactical style
Prefer something with adjustable cheeke piece
Thumb hole stocks also interest me.

What are your thoughts and suggestions??

fixed!:)

I have a McMillian which came with my Savage, however I have handled a few of Ian Robertson's stocks and would go that route if I was building a new rifle.

McMillan is in my opinion the top of the heap. H-S Precision also makes an good stock with the aluminum bedding block. I own a McMillan A-5 and a H-S but have tried several others including Robertson. Manners also make a McMillan clone which everyone who uses them seems to approve. The McMillan A-5 is the most comfortable stock I have ever used as is my favourite.

The HS stocks like the ones on the 700P are going for around 300ish new.

I should have a perfect condition 700P stock up on the EE as soon as my mcmillan comes in.

For $300 ish dollars for a NEW HS stock I will take as many as you can get.
Dealer price is considerably more than that.
New Take off stocks bring $300.00 easily

Should have aluminum bedding ...

Why? Don't limit your choices because of aluminum bedding...They need glass bedding too... a good fibreglass stock glass bedded works great...

Well then you're paying too much my friend. :)
I got a new take off 700P stock from MEL at SC for $250 after it came back from TAC-OPS with paint and texture.

Mike from TAC-OPS also puts them up for sale on SC when he has extras and he sells his for $200 100% BNIB

Might be worth your wild to buy a dozen or so at that price, but I'm guessing he doesn't keep them very long at that price.

Cost me $15 in shipping as a gift to get mine across the border.

Thanks for the tip but I have too much to loose to be illegally importing gun parts from the US.
I do pay too much as I buy from HS directly, but legally, for NIB stocks.
Take off stocks seem to run about $300.00 here, and when I can get them for that or less through legal means I buy them.

What is illegal about importing rifle stocks ? I have heard this before, but I have ordered a two B&C, one Bansners (high tech) in the last year, and have a McMillan coming direct from the factory. No problems whatsoever - am I missing something ?

Actually not only you are, but so are the guys shipping it to you.
But this is common. And just another example of the 2 tiered way the world operates.
As a dealer if we get caught by either Canada Customs of US Dept of State/Commerce or Homeland Security, importing/exporting ANY "critical firearm part", which includes stocks, barrels and most parts of a firearm, the penalties are HUGE and the ramifications never ending.
Some US suppliers do not seem to care that they are breaking their countries laws, so send stuff all over the world.
Being a dealer if we approach most wholesale suppliers they demand permits as per law, but I know many retailers do not.
There seems to be alot of suppliers that either do not KNOW their export rules or just don't care.
Being in the industry puts dealers in a position of not being able to claim they did not know they were contraveneing any laws, as we are expected to know about the laws pertaining to our business.
I don't agree with the 2 tiers system, and can't really fault guys that are able to get product any way they can, but I do hate it whe someone does get jacked up for not importing through the proscribed legal manners and whining about the fines and seizures.

Someone is... and now that you have posted it on the internet maybe someone will be caught doing this ...

For a few years now the US has placed restrictions on many things.. these restrictions have to do with items crossing the border... that is: items to be exported from the US or imported to the US...

... basically if it has anything to do with a gun... they are considered gun parts and if the value is over $100.00 on an invoice, individually or collectively, then it is required to be shipped under an export license. I believe the exception is shotgun parts... all of them regardless of value require paperwork...

Canada will issue the required papers which are supposed to be forwarded to the supplier who in turn applies for the US export paper...

All of this has been posted several times here on gunnutz...

Mauser Sporting Stock

Do the stock Co's carry stocks for older guns?
I would liike to buy a sporting stock for a large ring Mauser 98 action. Just one to put on my rifle when hunting and keep the hand carved one from being damaged.
I would like a custom stock for my Ruger No1 AB model and leave the regular stocks in the rack. The factory stock that comes on the No1's is too long for me and I would love to have one custom fitted. Love the Rugers but they aren't made for short guys.

Good to know about rifle stocks.

Funny how a big company like McMillan will send you one? Seems like alot to lose for a company to ship one up here if it is illegal?
