So I bought a Remington 870 TAC desert shotgun yesterday and it has a colour matched single bead sight... I was wondering if anyone has done up a nicer sight for their 870. I like something that's a bit more high vis.

thanks, Jim

Tactical with a bead sight? So how is this tactical? Ghost rings are the way to go, and sights need to be visible to be effective. Look up TacOrd, and a couple of sponsors. Trijicon ghost rings are the cats ass, but MMC and Vang Comp make nice ones too. I've also heard great things about XS brand sights but I don't know who stocks them.

My own personal prejudice is to go for the wilson combat/trijicon/scattergun or look at the XS ones.

:mumbles to self: who call a shotgun tactical with bead sights?

I have a bead sight on my 870P and have no problems with it. For home defence, which takes place mainly inside 25 yards, a bead is all you need.

But I guess if you want the look cool factor or do slug shooting, put the ghost rings on.

I think I might just paint the bead bright red for now. I really don't want to cut the whole thing off the barrel...

Take a look at the Vang Comp VCS Optical Rail w/Integral Rear Ghost-ring Sight. You can easily flip down the GR sight and add a Reddot.
I'm considering one for my 8.5" Dlask and will be contacting Tac-Ord soon!

I love the ghost ring sights too! I put them on my Dlask 870. I did read an article about a US Marine unit that was using their Mossberg 12 Gauge and they use bead sights. So my latest 870 build I'm going to leave the bead sight there. It is kind of cool and easy to acquire targets with. It just doesn't look as tacticool.

The whole reason I built a tactical 870 is that it shoulders perfectly every time and provides perfect right alignment every time. Putting an aftermarket sight on it just complicates things. If you know your weapon well you don't need anything but a bead...

Lets go shoot slugs at 100 yards. I'll use my 870 with 18" barrel and ghost rings. You can use your shotgun with your bead.

Lets see who gets more hits and or a tighter group on a figure 11 target.

Or a grizzly bear trashing your camp... :p

I agree they are luxuries, but I prefer a nice ghost ring myself.

Certainly more tactical shotgun work has been done with the bead than anything else, a bead is tough to beat at usual shotgun ranges and beyond that I'd rather have "rifle" sights than ghostrings.

Inexpensive reversible option ...

Hi,

I live on a mountain ranch with beaucoup bears and carry pepper spray and a Remington Marine Magnum almost everywhere I walk ... gotta love the idea of a Marine Magnum as a back-up!

This inexpensive TruGlo sight ($25) really adds to the effectiveness of the MM's standard bead sight. The green bead really "pops" in shady light.

Shooting slugs at 100 yards is far from tactical work.

A bead is all you need, and is probably the best option for home defence.

How do you shoot at 50 yards with a slug with just a bead?

Can you hit 5/5 center of mass on an FBI QIT target from a combat reload in 4 in the tube, one in hand in 5 seconds?

With a bead?

The weapon is called tactical, not home defence.

Tactics would require choosing the best weapon or round for a situation and LE officers and others are called to "Qual" on their weapons at at least 50 yards with slugs.

eg: You might even eject two rounds out and take 2 slugs and load from the side saddle to solve a long distance problem, then move and reload to use the shot for closer work at the next cover etc.

That is Tactical....

Lets see you do that with a bead.
