aftermarket sighs for 870 tactical?

The weapon is called tactical, not home defence.

Tactics would require choosing the best weapon or round for a situation and LE officers and others are called to "Qual" on their weapons at at least 50 yards with slugs.

eg: You might even eject two rounds out and take 2 slugs and load from the side saddle to solve a long distance problem, then move and reload to use the shot for closer work at the next cover etc.

That is Tactical....

Lets see you do that with a bead.

I haven't tried that with a bead, but the next time I take my shotgun out, I will.

Bottom line is, most threats are under 50 yards and are not stationary. A bead would lend itself to much faster target acquisition in those circumstances.

Also, a bead sight is also stands up to punishment better, and it is also easier to fix if damaged.

I think the bead has it's place. It doesn't get hung-up on scabbards if used on a breaching shotgun and is definately effective inside 40m. If you need to push your range out a bit with speed and accuracy there is nothing like a set of ghost rings.
My personal build is going old-school with wood furniture and rifle sights on a 12.5" barrel once Can-am starts bringing them in on their own.

The 6 round side saddle on my 870 carries 5 rounds 00B and 1 challenger slug. Reality being I feel my shotguns purpose and effective range is is inside of 40 yards and in the case of a home defense situation under 10. It is a close range weapon and breaching tool nothing more. 100 yard slug shots with iron sights regardless of design are tough on a stationary target and damn near impossible on a moving target. Maybe this fits the term "home defense" better than "tactical" however I feel that it is the most efficient real world use of this type of firearm.

You haven't use many GRS equiped shotguns lately, have you?
most of them are as tough as any iron sights you'll find on any combat rifles out there.

I use both, and I do find the bead sight quicker,But I have GRS on both my fighting shotguns.

Everything has it's place, and it's upto the individual to decide what's best for his or her situation.

An aftermarket sigh?

Goodness me, I make the most sensible post here ... and not one snotty/comment about it or an "aftermarket sigh" ... it sounds kinda dirty ... what's a guy have to do to get noticed?

Really, try to make an aftermarket sigh at work tomorrow, and see what happens.

I have always considered my shotguns range to be out to about 100 yards with slugs. I have shot flying clays with LPA (GRS) without problem once familiarized with them (with appropriate load). I find acquiring the target feels just as fast as with a bead (practice makes perfect), and ultimately better in accuracy. The tritium GRS (from scattergun?) are good, but the LPA type are better, but definately worth the effort IMO over the bead. It is cheaper to buy the SG already outfitted with the sights though....

Tactical with a bead sight? So how is this tactical?

:mumbles to self: who call a shotgun tactical with bead sights?

People were being "tactical" with bead-sighted riot guns LONG before glow in the dark whiz-bang doohickeys even existed.

The sights don't make it "tacticool", any more than owning a rifle makes you a marksman... IMHO.

Kinda goes without saying, that the user is the most important part. However this is CGN and we all KNOW that we are all ex-military special forces, now assigned as Sergeant of a three man Rapid Tactical Force for one of the largest retail shopping areas in Canada and abroad. Our skills are impeccable. If there is any failure to achieve a feat of marksmanship worthy of a Hollywood film slow-motion scene set to dramatic music, it is the fault of our gear. It only proves that we didn't agonize long enough about the minutia of our firearms, and that we are lucky we have our Mastery of three martial arts and the ability to wear the boots that allow us to climb walls to fall back on.

:D :D :D Mall Ninja forever! :D :D :D

I have both bead and Ghost ring. I don't believe that GRS are any slower than bead, because a well fitted shotgun should align properly left to right with your eyes closed, so your front sight is used like a bead, once you get used to ignoring the rear sight.

The rear sight comes in handy when your at distance that you need to start worrying about drop, GRS are made for it. While a bit slower as you align two points instead of one, it does help you aim for distance with drop better.

im LE and do just that..and we do it both on shotguns with the scattergun tech sights and shotguns with a bead sight..
i dont find it hard with a bead sight at all.. i prefer the ghost ring. but with slugs i find the bead just as accurate..

and the only thing tactical about that 870 tac is the name on the side.. if you want an 870 get the 870p.. the tactical is just an express painted a fancy colour and doubled in price..
