I'm considering buying a WWII era semi-auto. AG-42B and SVT-40 both look pretty interesting. I have difficulty making a choice, so I'm wandering what you guys thinking about that. Which one between the two would be the best buy ?

My experience with the AG-42b has been good. Its reasonably accurate, and quite reliable. I know nothing of the SVT-40, but if all things were equal, I'd look at the availability and price of ammo.

Both are very interesting pieces of rifle design.
The Ljungmann can be very accurate but is absolute murder on brass. The SVT-40 is a good shooter but almost all the available ammo is corrosive and cleaning will be mandatory. Some say the gas system has a reputation for being complicated to take-down.
Would like to buy a nice one of each some day...:)

I have a SVT 40 and it is a joy to shoot but a chore to clean. I'd say it is about the same as a Garand though if you do a complete teardown on both.

The bummer about the SVT is the fluted chamber. If you reload and care about brass, then this is an issue. I shoot milsurp ammo in mine but I have shot reloads and I say the brass will be good for two maybe three more reloads tops. If you don't reload, the ammo is not all that common.

I don't own a AG42B but I can tell you I have shot a couple and all I can offer on this one is, don't plan on reloading. The brass ends up in the next county..... The good think about the AG42B is you can buy the ammo fairly easily (6.5x55).

Yes, that's true. The Ljungmann doesn't offer the luxury of an adjustable gas valve like its bigger Egyptian offspring, the HAKIM.
This makes ejection very forceful. If the chamber is rough or sticky, it will regularly rip or deform the extraction groove (the Swede even did some experimentation with a very light lubrication on the cartridges).
And that shell deflector on the carrier cover does complete the job by bending the brass before it rebounds about 30 feet at 2 o'clock.
I think it was intended as a secondary projectile!
Unless you put a BIG foam pad on the deflector, don't lose your time searching for the brass, it will be mangled and useless.

As an owner of both, I say AG42B cause it's such a pleasure to shoot. But there's nothing wrong with the SVT-40....I like the big boom :)

It might not matter to you, but the AG42B has no combat history, whereas the SVT was WWII frontline issue.

Depending on your collecting focus this might make a differrence to you.

I would go for svt. The biggest issue will be cleaning - but I heard that there's a fair amount coming this summer so stack it deep! Seems the complaint is that ammo is not only expensive, but basically non-reloadable for the AG-42. The hakim is rough on brass too, but at least it can be adjusted. The SVT was far from perfectly made, but kindof fun anyways.
