managed to pick up an ag-42b about a year ago, havent shot it much since then due to a few issues with the rifle, and was considering shipping it down the line, until i caught a little glimmer of hope here..

my lgm has a nasty tendancy to destroy brass, i was just using factory federal cartridges as its a little hard to find here, and the way the gun chews them up i figured it wasnt worth it to reload...

im getting bent necks on the cases, some come out ok, but its about 1-2 out of the 10, the extractor claw is taking a good bite out of the base, and the firing pin indents the primer when the bolt closes...

tried streching the spring for the firing pin, but may need a new one, figured the weight of the bolt closing was causing the pin to move forward abit. the cartridge issue.. could changing the screw in the gas system and toning it down a bit help save the brass? maybe loading a few new cartidges a little lighter? or should i be looking in a different spot? like this rifle, but like said, cartidges are getting harder to come by at my local store, and i dont want to be chewing them up and disposing of them...

any thoughts or ideas would be apreciated....

The gas block screw can be changed out to an adjustable one, this will help some. Even with this I get about 3 to 4 firings from brass and they are toast.
However these rifles are very accurate and will shoot as well or better than most semi autos.
 
I agree I had both the AG42B and the Egyptian Hakim in 8mm they both shot well I liked the Hakim best....but they both pound the life out of the brass, I had the same issue with the extractor chewing the rims up and when the shell was ejected it bent the neck on both when they bounced off the shell deflector....nasty long forward right hand throw on em too :D
 
There is a tubular rubber pad that fits on the bolt carrier. Without it, cases get seriously whacked. I believe that Gunparts inc. still has them. they are often missing on these rifles but are original equipment.


Your brass will still get dinged, but not enough to prevent it being reloaded.
 
thanks for the info guys, will try that, the original foam shell deflector is on there still, so i will try the gas block, and maybe tool up to reload, and try some lighter loads, if i can solve the issues this rifle is going to get alot more usage,..:D
 
I LOVE MY AG42!!!

That said...I hate what it does to brass! Mine still has the foam deflector but, the problem [for re-using brass] is that extractor seriously marks up the bottom. It certainly throws spent cases out there! I was told many years ago that, "it's the way it is". Now, in the "modern age" we may read a viable soloution yet! I don't save the brass from the semi for-reloading anymore...
Aside from what it does to brass and, the noise(they are loud), it's by far my favourite to shoot!
 
Do a search here and on the net. There was one type of Swedish surplus ammo that was unsafe to use in these rifles. There were blowups.
 
you need a round with a moderate to fast burning powder most commerical ammo has slow burning powder so you need to make handloads or i found Privi works the best i heard norma is good too
