So a friend of mine gets a refurb from a fellow CGN'er and after he has the pistol for a week he recieves a letter from the CFR?
they send him this letter saying th pistol needs to be verified, and probably de-registered as restricted as it is an antique.

I had to ask.. "WTF?"

the gun is a .40/.357.
.40 wasnt developed until the early 1990's, so there is no possible way the gun could have been manufactured prior to 1898 as the letter suggests.

the gun was made in the States, and has no proof marks on it other than the "P" on the barrel.

it looks just like my brand new Sig 226R.
Any idea how old it may be?

mmaguy,
I was going to contact you and ask about this.
It is very strange. You never had this issue?
He now has to take pics of all 4 sides of the gun and mail it to them so it can be verified as either a restricted ( as it is) or to see if its an antique.
just plain stupid.
I figure someone made a typo and now they make him do all this extra work.

on a side note:
the pistol is great. He is very happy.

It is probably manufactured before 1998, and somehow that was imputed wrong (1895 instead of 1995?) and it triggered some type of an almost automated response from the computer system. Your tax dollars at work

There is a way to figure out the date of manufacture on a SIG. It is not as easy as the AE, AF, AG, etc. system that some manufacturers use, ... or like GLOCK where you can just look it up on the internet... but I think if you phone in to SIG in New Hampshire they can tell you.

There is no way they are going to de-register a .40S&W gun - because then anyone can buy it and you don't even need a PAL! As I understand it... those unregistered antique pistols are all guns that you can't even get any ammo for anyway... unless you were to make them from scratch.... so they are pretty much useless as firearms anyway. Just for collecting.

Of course it would be great to have a non-registered, non-restricted, legal .40S&W SIG :D... but explaining it to the cops and the judge is going to be a bugger...

It sucks that you have to even go through this verification b.s. though, as all the verification process is going to be is... the verifier take a looks at it for 2 seconds and says.. "Nope... restricted firearm... must be registered."

Just do what they say, de-register that antique :D, by the way I'm looking for an antique Sig for my collection.

PS, ask if they'll verify it by phone.
