I would like to address a number of points made in the post below:
this would never be accurate as 70% or better of the older people with firearms or collections would not say so on the internet . you all should understand that before the long gun registry the RCMP
estimated there were between 14, and 16 million firearms in Canada . they only registered 7 million . thats why Harper scraped it as a failure . there is 7 or 8 million unaccounted for firearms out there.
a better estimate would be gun shows 80% or better of the people at them are over 50 years old.
Although I will state again, this is, numerically speaking, a fairly small poll, however it still does provide a good insight into the hobby.

Do you have real and verifiable stats/surveys for this? What is the reasoning behind only older people not posting? Paranoia? Lack of tech savviness?

I don't see the solid connection here, however i will read between the lines and go with it. That is a bit of a stretch there. The poll doesn't ask for number of firearms, doesn't ask for serial numbers, doesn't ask for addresses, doesn't ask for names. Starting to see a trend in paranoia quite frankly. One should always be wary, however there is a limit.

Again, I would like to see your sources and statistics for this claim. Did you gather these numbers nationwide? From BC to the Atlantic provinces? Or was this regional, from the few shows in your area? Or was it one single show that you attend on a regular basis or just a single show you went to? Did you stand there with a clip board and survey people and ask them their age? Their reason to be there? Strictly to buy milsurps or were there to purchase hunting firearms? Hunting clothing? Or just attended for the sheer curiosity?
Let me posit another theory. More and more people purchase on-line (like this board) than go to gun shows. Anecdotally, it seems younger people are more comfortable to purchase on-line than older people. Hence it is plausible that the age make-up at shows is older, thus it seems older people are possibly over-represented at shows. This is not to say older people don't buy on-line or use the internet (as the poll above hints to), but all of this could skew the numbers slightly. But again, we have a number of respondents in the poll that are older.
The only real way to get a large number of data points is to gather all the data from PAL licences and then extract the ages from that data. However that only would tell you that they are firearms enthusiasts and not milsurp collectors. However all we have that I know of, is the poll above. It would be great to see the number of respondents be closer to 1000. This number being a large enough value to begin extracting meaningful data and trends.
