Ahh! the old 8x57

Given that the case capacity is slightly less in the 8x57 than the 30-06, and the bore diameter is slightly greater, I tend to lean more towards something slightly faster for powder choice in the 8x57 than I would for the 30-06. That's just me though, with a very heavy bullet or a longer barrel than average it may vary.

Case capacity and bore for the .308 Win is slightly less than the 8x57 and RL17 works very well with it and 180/200gr bullets.

It gives neither eye slanting speed nor bang flops but gets the job done in an efficient manner....................Harold

I have a Remington 700 "Classic" in 8x57.
It is one of my favorite hunting rifles.
I load the 200 Accubond & Partition with a big load of Vihtavuori N550.
I get just over 2700 fps with either bullet, and moa or less. [24" barrel]
The 180 Ballistic tip is chased by N150 at 2800 fps
I have shot 2 moose, 2 black bears, and 3 deer with this rifle.
longest shot was 270 yards, shortest was 60 yards.
I have not recovered a bullet yet...all have passed through, including the 180 Ballistic Tip on a big Cow Moose.
I regard my 8x57 on par with my 30-06 rifles for hunting.
As mentioned, North American loads are pretty "soft" velocity wise.

The best thing you can do for the 8x57 is to seat out the bullets as far as 1) the mag box allows; or 2) just off of the lands - whatever comes first.

Usually, with the older Euro rifles, it is the length of the mag that determines the OAL of the round. You can gain a good deal more powder room by seating your bullets out.

My experience indicates the older commercial 8s like heavy for caliber, shorter type bullets with flat bases. 200 gr roundnoses are wonderful in my older BRNOs. Not that the spitzers are horrible - just that they tend to sing with the stubby guys.

Makes the 8x57 quite a remarkable round.

It sure does. Not hard to get 2700 fps with 180s using Re17 in the 308 Win. It should work in the 8X57 with heavy bullets just fine.

Ted

Ted - I've done a search on the interwebs, but haven't found any RL17 and 8x57 load results. Have you given it a try?

I have a barrel in my shop waiting to be chambered to 8X57 AI. I am busy with a 6.5-08 AI build right now. The improved mauser is a great load and will be my "go to" moose gun.

Sound good but I'd gladly trade my 8x57JS 98 sporter for a .308 (Handi rifle please). As I have enough cartridge types to reload for already and I like .308's availability in our area.

Btw I'll have it for sale or trade this weekends Island gunshow in Duncan.
